During the last months I have been trying the should be easy experience of let watching 3D movies thru a 3D DLP projector. I haven't read any comments about that, neither the expert mags or blogs. The first main issue is that 3D bluray player must recognize a 3D device for playing the 3D contents. It's understood that all the devices (HDMI cables, switchers, etc.) are full 3D HD ready as well as the "order of switch on each one". Finally I was succesful with my Samsung BD-D8900 when I configured its "3D auto" feature that didn't let recognize the 3D device (the projector) to a "3D to 3D" one. That forced the player to send a 3D signal. I enjoyed 3D at last.  I looked afterwards for a better quality Bluray player and bought the high respected Sony  BDP-S790. To my surprise, the creators of the bluray technology were not able to make possible that this new device to send a 3D signal to my 3D projector. Again, Sony only had a "3D auto" feature and once more, didn't recognize as 3D my projector (a Mitsubishi HC7800D). Their only solution was to check everything and update software. I was obliged to return it back and continue with Samsung. I had looked for other manufacturers and no information in their manual instructions may assure that a different way of an "3D auto" configuration is possible and what happend when a real 3D device is not recognized when all the chain is full 3D HD. Do you have any experience or comments about that?  The best for this year.

Hmm, it's not always the blu-ray player I don't think. Also it doesn't matter which one is switched on first, or in what order. The 3D should be initiated by the disk once the blu-ray player reads it - that's when the check along the line occurs.

Each device in your chain must recognize the 3D signal, that's all that really matters. if you have secondary devices that are only 2D connected, this will mess everything up eg: if you have a tv as well as your projector and the tv is only 2D. The one thing you didn't note is, what is playing the audio in your system? And how is that connected to the blu-ray player.

I only have a cheap Pioneer BDP-150 (cost me ~$100 new), and it doesn't have any real problems. It's connected to a Denon AVR-3313 and then a Epson EH-TW9100 projector. It only ever messes up when I leave a 2D monitor turned on.

As pointed out by Parsec all components of your infrastructure must support 3D.
This means especially the connecting cables. Older HDMI cables do not necessarily support 3D (version < 1.4). Version 1.3 (and lower) cables are still sold (usually in the bargain bins), so having bought the cable just recently doesn't really tell you which one you have. Some have the version imprinted on connector and/or cable others have this info only on the package.
Make sure to connect player and projector with 1.4 (or higher) cables and try again.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

The point is that it's a 3D Bluray player connected with a dedicated high speed 3D HDMI 1.4 cable to a 3D DLP projector. There is a high speed 3D ready matricial switcher to a 2D TV set that tested doesn't interfered as it happened the same issue directly without the switcher (so I understand no influence with a third 2D device party involved). If the 3D Bluray player is setup in a 3D AUTO mode, the 3D projector is not recognized: so the disc is only played in 2D version. Samsung Bluray player has a forced "3D TO 3D" output mode that allows to play 3D and there is not any problem for watching 3D movies with the 3D projector. The same Samsug in their "3D AUTO" output mode does not recognized the 3D projector. But other manufacturers, as Sony, I tried with Playstation PS3 and the Sony BDP-S790 (with only a 3D AUTO output 3D mode) and the 3D projector is not recognized; no 3D movies are played at all. The test with Sony were made with same cable & switcher that works fine  with Samsung at 3D TO 3D mode.

It sounds to me like a bad projector if you have to FORCE a 3D signal to it. To me, it says the projector is not communicating properly that it supports 3D.
Signature banned: Reason out of date...

Hmm I would tend to agree..

One question though, do you use only one the hdmi inputs on the projector? Usually the 2 hdmi's are linked on such devices and if somethings connected to the other hdmi it might be messing up the signal.

Agree with Parsec and NewEnglander:
The projector is not communicating correctly with the player.
Since the cable is obviously capable of transmitting 3D content this leaves three possibilities:
1) Defective projector
2) Defective cable
3) Incorrect connection type

For finding out which one it is:
1. Connect the player directly to the projector with no other connections to player or projector

If it works as designed: one by one hook up all other connections until the error occurs again

2. Is the same as 1. but with a new HDMI connecting cable

If neither is bringing any improvement, I'm afraid that something inside the projector is broken.
If it's still under guarantee send it back to manufacturer for repair.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I'll try again according your suggestions. At its moment I tried with any of the two HDMI projector inputs (never both at same time) without result. The same happened when I tried with direct connection with the source. What confuse me it's when I works in forced source output. I'll see again and let you know. Thanks.
