| Posted: | | | | So around Thanksgiving I was given a new computer by a wonderful, fabulous friend of mine.
It works great, except it doesn't seem to read Disc ID.
I know the drive works, because it will rip CDs to my Itunes and it will play DVDs.
Before, on my elderly computer, I would simply click on the disc section, Add Disc, hit eject, put the disc in, and the Disc ID was automatically read and appeared in the box and could be added. This no longer happens. It also won't read the Disc ID when you go to "Add by Inserted Disc" if you want to make a child profile.
Anyone have any clue? | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | Sometimes it doesn't seem to pick it up right away. Try putting it in for a bit then opening the profile and seeing if it appears under the drive. That's the only thing I can think of, because obviously it is reading data if you can watch a DVD. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

It didn't have a drive associated with it. Didn't even think to go up there after I installed Profiler on the new system. | Posted: | | | | Despite this seeming like it should have been the answer, it does not solve the problem. So, I still can't add any disc ID information. Any other ideas? | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | No, but since this came around more often (at least 3 cases that I can recall), it's probably best to open a support ticket at Invelos. Possibly a glitch in the program. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | This has happened to me many, many times.
Sometimes putting the disc in and ejecting it a couple of times works.
I've even given up and then tried it months later without a problem.
This problem drives me crazy because there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to happen or any fix when it does.
Since I can see the disc id, I wish invelos would allow us to type it in as we do the UPC/EAN.
I know that we can copy and paste the disc id into profiler in certain situations so I don't think it would be that difficult to fix on invelos' end. |

| Posted: | | | | As a test, try the DVDPca tool (based on DVDInfo). It can be run both as a standalone tool and as a plugin. It uses similar code as DVD Profiler to read the disc ID, and it also pulls other metadata from the disc to assist in submitting a new profile. Regardless of whether you decide to use the tool, it could provide some clues about the problem. I have yet to get any report of it not reading the disc ID of a DVD (Blu-Rays are another matter). | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. | Posted: | | | | Another point. Sometimes programs will "block" each other from accessing certain devices. Think about other programs that you have installed that use the DVD drive. It is a "first come - first served" world. That could explain why it doesn't happen all the time. Close down any other media programs (players, rippers, etc.) that access the DVD drive, and then try DVD Profiler. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. I don't use my computer for much - emails, invelos, dvdcollectorsonline.com and my collection. I'm not sure what you mean by "media players" - the only thing I use that might qualify is Cyberlink PowerDVD - but I've never added anything else because I watch my movies on TV. | | | Last edited: by Kathy |

| Posted: | | | | Here's some explanation of what a DVD ripper is. And you might have more media players on your computer than you think. One straightforward example is Windows Media Player which is part of many Windows installations. Other players may e.g. have come with your DVD, CD or Blu-ray drive(s). | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

I think you have the correct understanding on what I mean. But what is often missed, is that not all software is explicitly installed. Sometimes things get installed without your knowledge. Even Microsoft is notorious for running software in the background, such as Windows Media Player for gathering media library entries. Nero has a "scout" program. Verizon has a Media Manager. And the list goes on. Older versions of the program AnyDVD were rumored to conflict with DVDP, but recent versions work OK - I use them myself. I know of one DVD Player that almost invariably installed itself whenever you put a DVD in your computer - don't remember its name at the moment. I'll come back and update this post later. (Edit: I think InterVideo or Ulead or WinDVD). So, it is no wonder that strange things can happen sometimes. In your case, it seems you have devised a strategy that suits your needs. So I wouldn't sweat it, but for anybody who has more serious or persistent issues, they will have to do the painful analysis of their system software, perhaps with the help of a tech-savvy friend. | Posted: | | | | I installed mediadogg's plugin and it worked! Not that I know how to work the plugin, not a clue, but it made Profiler read the disc ID.
Also, while I seem to have been premature in saying that the drive will play a DVD, that got fixed too. The player was recognizing it as a DVD but not actually playing it - but after installing the plugin and it reading the disc ID, it brought up a screen in Windows Media Center to set up the region for the player.
So, I'm thinking the problems all stems from the computer being new. My friend Andrew gave it to me. His dad passed away and it was one of the many, many things he had ordered from home shopping network and never opened. Andrew had opened it to make sure it worked before giving it to me, but I had no idea what had been installed, what needed to be set up or anything. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield | | | Last edited: by Danae Cassandra |

| Posted: | | | | I have kind of a follow up to this question-- is there a way to add blu-ray child profiles if you don't have a blu-ray drive in your computer? I have a few BD TV series I'd like to add the discs to, but nothing to read the disc IDs with. Also, thanks for the above tips-- I was having the same issue with intermitten disc IDs or none at all. |

| Posted: | | | | I've seen a number of people ask in the Contribution Forum if someone has a BR drive and whichever blu-ray set and if they will contribute a bare bones profile. Then the asker downloads the bare bones and does a full audit.
Other than that, not a clue for my part. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | I don't think there is a way. In fact, even with a drive, I could not find a way to get the BD Disc ID that Invelos uses without using a plugin. So DVDPca cannot get a BD Disc ID in standalone mode, even if there is a BD drive available. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here.
