No offence, but that is a really broad question.

For comedy, anything ranges from all-out slapstick to more like real drama but with a lighter side to it and anything inbetween. So, for instance, from what you've seen throughout the years on TV, were the things you liked? Obviously we could take it from there.

For animation, do realise this is about a design choice by the producers and director (like black&white or colour), and says nothing about the genre or topic of the movie. When it comes to technique, do you like the old hand-drawn animation from the likes of Snow White (Studio: Disney) or Nausicaa (studio: Ghibli), or do you prefer today's computer generated animation like Monsters&Aliens (studio: Dreamworks), Up (studio: Pixar), etc.?  Or movies with a different take on the animation style used: Les Triplettes de Belleville, Persepolis, Book of Kells, ... or animation technique: The pirates! (claymation), Team America (puppetry) and so on. The studio names and movie titles will give you a start for the range of pictures out there.

Topic-wise Madagascar and Shrek deliver you comedy with talking animals and talking fantasy beasts. Toy Story is comedy and melodrama with talking toys. Those you already have.

On the other end of the genre spectrum there is war drama ('Grave of the fireflies') and a lot of science fiction (Akira, Ghost in the Shell etc). Of course there is the familiar kid friendly stuff --with a lot based on fairy tales of old-- by Disney. But then there is also adult horror ("Blood') and serious stuff ('Watership Down'). So a bit of idea where you want to go might help us to make suggestions.

Anyways, for starters you might want to look ar what won prices recently, like at the Oscars for animated movies, likewise BAFTA and Golden globes.

Right. Now if you'll peruse my DVD collection (the button with the movie roll in the mail header) you'll find lots and lots of animation in there, about 400 titles in the 3500+ collection.

Whether you like a particular movie is very much a personal thing. But as a hint to what I really like, these are the movies that I keep rewatching from time to time:

I have just over 400 animation titles as well (and close to 700 anime).  So you can have a look at my collection as well.

Eommen is absolutely right in recommending Ghibli & Pixar as studios; everything Ghibli has put out is high quality and Pixar is also mostly full of win.  Wall-E is my favorite Pixar film, and Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies are my favorites from Ghibli.  Fireflies is one fo my all-time top 5, across any genre.  Disney has a lot of good films, and a lot of mediocre films - IMO their best are Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King (even if it is a ripoff of Kimba).

For other studios, I might recommend

- 9 (Focus Features/Relativity Media, great stop motion work & atmosphere)
- Barefoot Gen (Mad House, powerful anti-war film)
- Despicable Me (Illumination, a really fun, modern piece)
- The Last Unicorn (Rankin Bass, beautiful piece of fantasy)
- The Nightmare Before Christmas  (Touchstone, I watch this every October)
- Perfect Blue (Rex Entertainment, great suspense/thriller for adults)
- The Secret of Kells (international co-production, based on art from The Book of Kells, great, different)

- Rock & Rule
- Yellow Submarine
- South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut
- The Lorax
- The Secret of Nimh
- Titan A.E.

Comedy is very subjective, since there are so many levels and directions it can take.
One person's funny might offend or bore another person.
