Now that the remote database stuff is in, I'd like to investigate getting DVD Profiler running on a server in my home, and then accessing it via the remote database stuff from my client machines.  I don't want to have to login to the server and manually start DVDPro.exe, I'd like it to run as a Windows service.  Has anyone tried this?  Any pitfalls I should be aware of?  Is this just going to fail miserably?

The desktop version is not a Windows service, so I don't think it would work very well.

Yes, I'm worried about the UI and the inability to shut down the service cleanly to avoid DB corruption.  Seems like this is going to eventually be a big deal for people if the iPhone version requires a PC client to be up at all times - I'd hate to have my usage broken because, for example, the PC rebooted itself to apply updates and I didn't log back in.

So... Can Ken make this work someday?

The iPhone version does not require the PC version to be up all the time. It is only required to be up when you want to synch one way or the other.

You could try to download the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools. They should include 2 tools.

One is called Instsrv.exe and allows a program to be converted to a service.

The second one is called srvany.exe and is used to start the created service.

This article is for windows NT, but I think the syntax is the same for the later version.

Try it with a test db or make sure you have a decent backup to avoid database corruption. There is somewhere a registry key that allows the service to interact with the desktop. You may need to enable this.
