Ok I run a 4:3 TV 99.9% of my DVD's are Widescreen So I alway have the black bars.

Went to a buddies place to check out his new set up PS3 for BR playback into a 47" Sony HD TV

While watching Batman Dark Knight it seemed to kick from what looked like full screen ( filling the screen ) to having top and bottom bars.

Now as I am use to having the bars when I get my new TV when I watch DVD's in Widescreen 16:9 or Anamorphic will I still be getting bars ?

I just expect the widescreen to play back using the entire screen.

The great thing about Blu-ray is that the OAR (original aspect ratio) is preserved. That means that for the following, you'll see this:
2.40:1, 2.35:1, 2:20.1 etc : you see black bars
1.85:1 : you will see a tiny bit of black bars
1.78.1 : full screen

The reason why this is good, is that the image doesn't get distorted: nothing is cropped off the sides and nothing is 'stretched'. You get it exactly as it was made, meaning that for some (most) movies, you have indeed black bars

Dark Knight has a shifting aspect ratio as the scenes filmed in IMAX are 1.78:1 whereas the other scenes are filmed in 2.40:1.

If you want your Blu-ray player to correctly display DVD's in the OAR of themovie, just make sure you turn off all zoom features on your HDTV as well as your BD player, otherwise it will still stretch and crop the image.

Lots of good and more technical info here:

Dark Knight is a bit of an odd duck, , though some DVD releases of Dr. Strangelove shifted between 1.78 & 1.66. On Blu-ray, all movies are in a 16:9 frame and will pe positioned to maximize their use of the frame. That is, if a movie is wider than 1.78, it will have mattes above and below. If it is narrow, it will have mattes on the sides.

Here's a well-written and easy to understand primer on the subject of widescreen and aspect ratios:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/aspectratios/widescreenorama.html

I heartily recommend it to anyone who's ever wondered about the black bars.

Note: It was written a few years ago, so when it refers to "current TVs" it's talking about square-ish 4x3 TVs, not modern widescreen sets.
