Is there anything in particular you need help with? If you can give us a little more detailed information on what you need, I'm sure we will be able to help.

For example - are you having difficulty adding DVDs to your collection?

Don't be afraid to ask for help in the forums - I remember well starting a thread I titled "stupid questions" because I had no idea what to do! 

I suppose I could make a few Flash demos when I find the time.

I often take for granted being able to look through a program and understand its features even after answering a question or two about the features themselves.

Well, since you said I could... you are old fashioned

But seriously...

I prefer interaction more than plain videos. See the image, click it, and you are told what it does. I always have to hold back, though, else I am biting off far more than I can chew.

Outlining key features seems easy enough. Some text telling what and an image making it clear, but my not being a particularly fast Flash worker (particularly with other projects always in my plate), it's not as if I am promising this by the end of the week.



As for the original poster, for now just look around and if there is anything specific you can think of that you'd like to understand better ("what does this button do"... "how do I...."), by all means ask!

Will start by reading the faq as suggested...
Reason is, I bought the software a few years ago and have tried to start applying it several times, but always let it drop because I was overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of options, buttons and possibilities...too difficult and too little time.
A starters' guide would be nice for sure, I hate plioughing my way through help files: IMO these are more for looking up "Hey, what's that!" instances...

I have a dream! 
We have a large DVD and Blu ray collection, plus many (mostly) classical cd's and sacd's.
The DVD's are in a row of these American selection cylinders that house 80 each, the bd's are in their original amarays to show off to visitors.   
What I want is number these and setup my small Asus netbook to select "one to play" with search options for artist, genre etc.: just have one empty spot to put the thing permanently...got WLAN for web access.
I would also like to see all the item info on ONE screen, not having to click away to get some vital info like subtitling (not everybody in my family speaks English good enough).

A few concrete questions:
- Is it possible to use the software for cd's?
- I cannot seem to find a location entry option - like A17 (bin A Nr. 17).
- Can I make several "containers", bd/dvd/cd/sacd etc. to search through?

I am aware setting up a good database requires more transpiration than inspiration.
Tried MS Access, but the project grew and grew while trying, and I left it.
Really hope to find some "how to start" information...

Just to clarify this point - you can only enter location details when a disc has been added to the profile. Luckily Ken added an "Add disc" button to the Personalise window so that shouldn't be a big problem.

Edit: I also think the biggest stumbling block for new users is how to create local-only or "manual" profiles - like ones for your CDs. It's easy, but not obvious: When you open the "Add DVD" window there is a small tickbox at the bottom called "download profile from Invelos", untick that and you will be allowed to create local, manual profiles for anything you like.

Quite frankly, I think for CDs and SACDs you're better off using a dedicated programme such as Music Collector or
Orange CD.

While it is possible to use DVDProfiler for cataloging other media, it is very cumbersome, since you'd have to enter all data yourself, whereas with the programmes I mentioned you can usually download the data.

You asked about displaying subtitles without having to click. Well, there are many, many layouts available for DVDProfiler. Go to View / Load Layout and then click the Get More Layouts button at the bottom left of the window that's opening. There must be layouts available which display subtitles by default. Moreover, you can create layouts yourself and also modify existing layouts to show exactly what you want (View / Save Layout; and then just give your modified layout a distinctive name).

Disc locations can be stored using DVD / Personalise. At the bottom there's a window with the discs for the profile (you may have to add them first if they're not yet in there through DVD / Edit; choose Discs in the left column). For each disc you can specify Location and Slot, which gives you exactly what you want.

Then your question about "containers".
At the top left in the programme there is a section called Filters. Under the Audio/Subs tab, you can filter on subtitles to find out which titles in your collection have (e.g.) Dutch subtitles. There is also a Formats tab in which you can filter on DVD, Blu-ray etc.
Additionally it is possible to create custom Collection Categories (e.g. a dedicated Blu-ray category). Click on one of the tabs heading your collection list (e.g. Owned), right-click, go to Other and then Edit Custom Collection Categories. Please note that at present the contents of custom collections are not uploaded to your on-line collection, so they are local only.
