| Posted: | | | | My son from out of town.. sent me this email requesting some advice and help.. and I thought I'd post it here for my Invelos family to help us ( him) out .. Here is the email:
--I bought a Panasonic Blue Ray BD-DMP60 blue ray player because I was hoping it would play multi-regional discs. From what I was lead to understand this player could play PAL and NTSC. It works great on normal DVD, and I suppose I would have bought a Blue Ray player eventually, but I was hoping in fact it would play some PAL DVD's I have of some UK and Australian films I have. I put in an old Two Ronnies DVD PAL DVD (or at least what I believe to be PAL) and the Blu Ray player said couldn't read the disc!
I thought from this description it would work: http://www.world-import.com/Panasonic_DMP- BD60_Region_Free_Blu_Ray_DVD_Player_110_volt.htm
Is this because I need to update the Firmware on the player? I've never done it before but maybe if I did would it work?
...I think my new Sharp Aquos TV is a multi system TV.
The Blue Ray play is still a decent purchase I guess for $199 plus the HDMI cable at the store and the guy gave it to me (which he said at cost) for $29.99. (Did he just tell me I was getting a deal?) You can certainly see the difference in viewing between the two cables in terms of picture quality and colour when watching a Blue Ray disc (I bought Gangs of New York)
Still, I want to find a way to watch these PAL DVD's. It sounds like this (see below) would be the way to go if this new Blue Ray player isn't going to do the job.
http://stores.ebay.com/DaaVeeDee/Our-Products-And- Policies.html_W0QQsspagenameZSTOREQ3aPROMOBOXQ3aLINKSQQtZkm#regions
and specifically getting one of these Phillips DVP642 players just to keep for that purpose maybe? I've never bought anything off of Amazon though. but it seems the most cost effective route.
I really wish it wasn't so hard to get around this PAL/NTSC stuff! I wish this new Blue Ray Player could do the job this cheap Philips item could do!
Is it indeed a firmware issue? Maybe i just need a more recent PAL disc to try... ????

| Posted: | | | | I own a Region A DMP-BD60, and the manual states it cannot play PAL discs.
Mine is a standard US player, not the region free version. This requires a chip mod apparently. I found the region free blu-ray players were way too expensive. It's cheaper to buy 2 seperate players. Maybe the cheapest solution is to buy a 2nd BD60 in Europe. This will play Region B only Blu-Ray and Region 2 PAL DVD.
Btw, I actually tested a region free PAL disc in my US player, and a message "cannot play" pops up. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

| Posted: | | | | You can get region mods for that one here, hereand here (near the bottom). Oppo can't afford to modify its players themselves, or it would cost them their Blu-ray license. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

| Posted: | | | | What I don't understand is the idea of a "Region Free" player that doesn't support PAL. Where is the sense in making it "Region Free" then?? | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | That is where he was problemed with the description as well.. I sent him the info provided above .. and also noted that if he only has 'two' Pal discs,. amongs his many dozens and dozens of NTSC , perhaps the best idea would be to to rip the 2 discs to .avi formats and and reburn the titles back to dvd r's .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. To play R3 NTSC discs? But I agree, I wouldn't want one myself either. To me, "region free" equals "universally usable". | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

There's a number of TVs and projectors out there that are dual system, so for those TVs there's no need to have a player that does the PAL->NTSC conversion. | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! | Posted: | | | | I think the real question here is did he purchase the unit from the website he listed, or did he go into a retail shop here in the states and buy it?
It sounds like he went into the retail shop, in which case he got the stock off the shelve version... the website he got his info about the region free blu-ray player is selling a modified version... their website specifically states they have done a hardware modification to make this possible.
Hope that helps! | | | -JoN |
