How do people with large collections store/catalog their DVDs? |

| | Posted: | | | | I'm trying to figure out how to make my collection more compact (without selling the DVDs!). Only method I can think of is to use CD/DVD albums to store the discs and then storage the cases. Any other ideas?
Also, how do people catalog their collection? genre type, year, chaotic randomness, etc.?
I have about 4000 dvds to organize so I need some good suggestions! |

If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have line the halls with Bolts racks and one bed room for my DVDs. Now that I don't have any more spare bed rooms, (when I built the house I turned one bed room into a lab). I don't have to worry about relatives sponging off me, but hell I've out-lived them.
I'm a pack rat and I've been collection stuff since I was in the Air Force and I could buy LPS for $2.50 a the PX. Before I retired I thought about taking some courses at ASU, but the pit is across town and the parjing is almost nonresistant. I saw and ad in the Smithsonian by the Teaching Company fro a set of 54 sets of lectures on philosophy, that has grown to 84 sets. I have courses on everything form comparative religion to the chaos theory.
I keep the TV series (US and other seperate), mystery (crime), sci-fi, animation (anime), special interest and western segregated, the rest in alphabetical order. Custom cases and box sets of actors and directors separate.
I use tags lots ansd lots of tags.
Parent tags for
Box sets w/child tags for child, parent level 1 & 2.
TV with child tags for series (completed series), mini-series, , movies/plays, etc.
Music wiith child tags for the music types.
Tag with child tags for the stores I sho in.

| | Posted: | | | | I guess it depends if you have the room for normal shelves. If you do, then why not put them all on shelves. Build shelves that go from floor and up to the ceiling to get max out of the space and try to fit as many shelves as you can. It kind of seems like you dont though. If you keep a dvd in a sleeve of some kind it is a lot more prone to damages/scratches. You could always use slim dvd covers instead of the regular ones. |

| | Posted: | | | | In a few years when I move into a bigger house, I'll have a dedicated home theater room with built-in floor to ceiling cabinets for the collection. However, until then, I do not want to purchase any more furniture. Up until five years ago, I had two dvd shelves that held around 500 dvds. Once my collection exceeded that size, I started placing everything in boxes.
I want to get rid of the numerous brown boxes, but since there are no other alternatives not involving more furniture, I'll have to use dvd albums. But I'll keep the Criterions and other prized dvds in the original cases.
As far as organizing, I think I'll break it out by tv / foreign language / animation / documentaries / western / sci-fi. Rest will be by decade. Trying to decide whether to break out musicals and horror as well. |

| | Posted: | | | | I have almost 1,000 dvds. When I was 17, I built my own shelf that holds the majority of my collection. I started storing all my TV collections on my entertainment center, and all my Christian DVD's in a seperate DVD shelf next to my entertainment center, and all the rest in the main shelving cabnet I built.
Finding more storage is becoming a problem for me too, as I am running out of room.

The Sony CX995V is one of the most compact ways to store 400 DVDs, and oh by the way it includes an amazing upscaling player with DVD output - less than $250. I have 3 of them, plus 3 VGPXL1B2 200 disc changers with DVD-RW. All are computer controlled through DVD Profiler. Click on the DVD, and it plays  . That's 1800 DVDs stored in a space smaller than a washing machine. | | | Thanks for your support.

I made dividers per genre that are black letters on a solid yellow background and stick out approximately 1 inch farther than the DVDs so they're easy to spot, then alphabetical within each genre. The Blu-rays have their own section...all alphabetical for now until it grows large enough to need dividers, then I plan to move them into the general population. I will keep them separate from the DVDs within each genre section and alphabetical.
