What types of posts, if any, do you think should be moderated?

(To make the options easier, I'm going to assume that everyone is ok with spam posts being moderated.)

I voted something else, because IMO personal attacks doesn't cover more "general" attacks against a race, nationality etc... these kind of hate posts should be removed even if they are not personally against anyone here - not that these posts have been any kind of problem so far, fortunately.

I picked 'Something Else'.  While too many of them can be a pain in the butt, sometimes, off-topic posts can lead us in a direction that we hadn't originally thought of.  A soft touch is needed in this area.  Personal attacks, however, should always be moderated.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Something else. As Unicus states, Off Topic posts can sometimes be useful. If it's completely off topic, for example in the middle of a thread, someone starts asking about the weather for no-reason, edit that. However if it's still on a somewhat connection, leave it & see where it goes.

Something else.  I go along with what Unicus and Forget have said.  Plus the "hate" posts Draxen mentions.

I voted for Something Else, because in my view the entire moderator concept represents nothing more than a personal attack on a handful of users, whom another handful users wish to be able control or even try to have banned as has been mentioned several times recently by one user. I have never in the ten years with profiler, tried to control someone's speech or thought, i may disagree passionately witht them and I may argue a point...but that is what debate is about. The problem is that some users will not simply say we have to agree to disagree...even i should perhaps do that more often.

We are all adults here, I think, right now some of us are behaving like willful children and in doing so they are not working in the best interests of the community. I could list the ways in which we are behaving as spoiled brats, but that would probably be viewed as an attack instead of constructive criticism which seems to not be allowed anymore.

I'll just make the statement that calling profile submissions garbage, junk, crap, destroying the entire dabase, etc. is not constructive criticism.  Just because the contributor's heritage wasn't brought into question, doesn't somehow make the post virtuous.

I'm all for moderating this kind of stuff.  If someone thinks that not being allowed to be a jerk stifles their freedom of speech, then so be it.  I'm sure there are plenty of other forums out there that welcome jerks.

Midnit:

To clarify those comments for you. Some users have a tebndency to do no more than they feel they HAVE to comport with the Rules, and to heck with providing goodinformation for the rest of the Community. You have seen my notes, where i currently list Actual Crew roles where they depart from Profiler...do I HAVE to do that...no clearly not, then why  do I do it. Two reasons, personal pride in my knowledge that I am going above and beyond in providing data to the community, and providing data to the community which provides clarity and contetxt to the data being Contributed. To me a user who simply says I checked the CLT and this is the name without providing any further information is indeed submitting a BAD Contribution, a user who refuses to provide Name=NameB support is also providing bad data. As I noted recerntly, I acme across a Carol Jones credit, this is not Carolyn Jones, though I have little doubt that at some point someone would have made that connection just based on the Name Variant Tool, and they still might, but they are not the same person despite the similarity of the name.

I won't provide such lane support for any iof my Contributions and I resent someone who refuses to and I view the Contribution as garbage, plain and simple. I want to build a quality database, good enough is not good enough, I want the links to work correctly and not make some strange connection between two people who arte not the same. This is even more crucial with crew data, who in all likelihood we don't have anything photographically, beyond a bunch of letters making a name yet Jones=Jones, Jr just because the Variant too says they are similar...not in my book.

The Notes serve far more than simply communicating with the screeners, they provide the Community with an audit trail of what work was done and how it was supported or was not supported which makes it fair game.

I am very proud of the users that are far-sighted enough and care enough to provide clear and communicative notes. I am likewise insulted by those who can't see any further than how many keystrokes can i avoid, and thereby don't communicate anything of real value.

Simply stating, "No proof provided that these are the same people" in your "No" vote would suffice.  Then it's up to the screeners.

Back on topic....Something else.

Moderation is an art which should ebb and flow with the forum as required, but generally, should be as light-handed as possible while at the same time maintaining an appropriate atmosphere.

I don't think it can be as defined as "edit/delete any specific types of posts", although certain types should always be moderated as noted by others.

That would be perfectly fine by me, hal. That is until some user(s) decides to edit his Contribution notes to include a personal attack of one sort or another for daring to vote my conscience. In my book such attacks should totally invalidate any Contribution immediately.

The part that really depresses me is when those kinds of Contributions come down for an update, where I am the ultimate arbiter. I do check the notes and insufficiently doumented data will be absolutely rejected  and quite frankly I feel badly when i do it, everytime, but neither am I willing to accept data which is based on assumptions which quite possibly could later be proven to have been false. And it will happen...sooner or later.

As I said in another thread, the entire process which led to the writing of the Rules has been a labor of love for both Profiler and my fellow users, for me and an effort to build a better product from which we can all create our own custom databases. And all too sadly that pleasure has been taken from me by those who simply wish to bicker over this word or that word, or invent non-existent controversies for whatever their agenda is..which I frankly don't comprehend at all.<shrugs>

If voted "Off-topic and Personal Attacks", but I would add redundant posts by the same user that do nothing but reiterate the same opinion over and over. Such behavior disrupts a discussion as much as off-topic posts.

Goal-oriented threads that aim at finding a solution for a particular problem should be moderated very strictly to keep the discussion on track. For threads with a broader scope or recreational threads, moderation can be much more relaxed.

I agree.

Unfortunately, such posts did happen a few times in the past, even since moderation has started. But mostly it was a combination of "personal" and "general" attack.
