Other than the announcement...there's really nothing of value on this site...no images, nothing.

Why always so negative? "More detailed product specifications will follow at the end of February 2009.", according to the press release. And anyone familiar with Philips design will recognise it as a picture of the panel (without stand).

Who's being negative? I simply stated the fact that, other than the anouncement, there was no further info. So...why are you so negative?

For those who understand German, here's a product preview of this 21:9 panel. Looks interesting!

I don't understand the excitement?
Lost of movies have a lower aspect ratio which will result in black pillars on each side. Not something I'd prefer really. Nice to have on the side though, for the 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 ratio movies I have

Black pillars on each side?!?! You mean on two sides, right? How's that worse than with 16:9 or 4:3 sets? Well, 4:3 movies will certainly have a lot of unused screen space, that's true, but the majority of visually really impressive movies is shot in >2:1, isn't it? Such a TV plus an additional 4:3 set would be the best solution if you have to go with actual TV sets...

I wonder if DVD authoring for anamorphic will compensate for this new size?? ..
I mean- right now ananmorphic DVD's (no matter what aspect ratio)  is authored to 16x9..

Would that mean we would have to all go and rebuy our favourites again???

The downside of a 21:9 panel obviously is that it will involve scaling of 2.4:1 source material (whether DVD or Blu-Ray), the upside that it can be zoomed to fill the screen and thus enhance the "theatre experience".

a "side" is by definition the vertical bar; we're not talking in trigonomic terms ofcourse. The other two would be top and bottom. So that's two pillars by my count

My guess is this new aspect ratio will cause havoc on careful subtitle placement, optimised for 16:9 TV's. Does anybody know whether HDMI will provide the feedback from TV to player to readjust, if possible, the generated image?
Any player not transmitting via HDMI will likely present problems with this ratio.

It'll be interesting to see what solutions Philips provides. After all, retailers will have to sell these screens... In the past they have often made disappointing products, so I am cautious.

But that's really expensive, Ken. The ultimate (and cheapest) solution would be to get a 2.35:1 projection screen, and use black curtains when showing 1.85:1

Definately not cheap, but less expensive than other motorized systems.  Also, by varying the height rather than the width you can avoid digital stretching of the image which you get with the 2.35:1 anamorphic systems.

The Philips in the OP isn't going to be cheap either.
