I just purchased this great piece of software, and I have one problem that I can't seem to find info on a response.

I want to create a new category of the form of Own. Here is my problem, I live in two different places and I have some DVDs at one home, and some at the other. So I want to create different owned categories, is there anyway I can do this? Or is the Own, Wishlist, Ordered, set in stone?

Thanks

That is pretty much set in stone.  You can, however, use them for other than what they are labeled.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Good thinking, I wasn't planning on using those other two tabs anyway, so that is exactly what I will do. Thanks for the snappy response! I can now get on with adding the 200 or so DVDs I have

I use "Ordered" for movies I know that are not Region 1 that I now have Region 1 versions.  If that makes sense.

You can also edit your translation file to change the name of the tabs.  But bear in mind that titles in the ordered tab can't have collection numbers and if you ever get the mobile version you wont be able to add a watched event to them on the mobile device.  A lot of people have been requesting the ability to create new tabs lately so hopefully it will be implemented soon.

You could also keep an eye out on the plugins forum.
Mediadogg has withdrawn his old MyTabs plugin, which would allow you to customise tabs, but I believe he said he was thinking about revisiting it because it did seem quite popular.

Luckily I have a way of adding collection numbers myself, I just add them in the notes section. I also don't plan to use the mobile version, so I will have a look at examining the translation file. Although, I have been adding my collection and know what Own, Ordered, Wishlist, represent, so I may just hold off in case new tabs are avaliable in future versions. North, I think that is good news!

Cheers

If I might add my 2 cents. As a long-term strategy, I would recommend avoiding non-reversible or hard to reverse uses of the database. For example, DVDP already has a Collection#, Location and slot fields that can be easily edited, displayed and sorted. Why bury that information in Notes?

The power of Tags cannot be overstated. While there are still requested features involving Tags pending, when they do come, you'll be ready. Futhermore, Tags are easy for Plugin developers to grab and process - much faster than scanning Notes text. So, the chance that a plugin can be made to do what you need is increased if you use Tags and stick to using the pre-defined fields the way they were orginally intended as much as possible.

Ok, end of sermon ...

(Well one more thing. Ken's clever implementation of Tags, which are hierarchical and global, gives you the near equivalent of user-defined fields and values. A tag can be whatever you want, with many levels of subsetting, and once defined, any profile can use them. Most cool. Now if only we had a way of making Tabs that are based on Tags ...  )
Thanks for your support.

I finished adding my collection, and I experimented with the tabs. The number/position isn't important info for me, but I modified some things as you suggested with my own tags. It works really well, and I love the filter function too!

Thanks for the advice, I'm sure I will learn more about this great app over time.
