| Posted: | | | | I had read somewhere that if the DVD is badly damaged (and it is not a loss if it doesn't work) try:
Use car wax on the DVD - wipe off the excess.
OR
Place the DVD in very hot water. |

| Posted: | | | | The best thing to do with young kids is make a back up and only let them use the back up keeping the original in good condition, then you can make more back ups for them when they need them. I would also check ebay, kids dvd's can be found cheap there.

| Posted: | | | | Try to make a backup now. My computer drive reads many scuffed and damaged looking dvds that my player can't handle. Guess it has a better laser or soemthing, but some discs that look like they've been cleaned with sandpaper and chainsaw, which frooze my player up completly, have been read fine by computer's drive. Once they're in, I turn on the magic software and can dub them or rip the video or whatever I want. If they have sticky stuff on the playing surface (like gum or peanut butter and jelly), then clean them first with rubbing alcohol or goo-gone. | | | Last edited: by bigdaddyhorse |

| Posted: | | | | Some good suggestions have been given, I like bigdaddyhorse's "sandpaper and chainsaw" comment.
Anyway try cleaning them carefully as already suggested. You might also try searching for them on Ebay (I know it isn't a great idea) you can sometimes find decent copies of stuff there, but you have to be careful about the pirated stuff that is sometimes there. Best to ask sellers questions about their discs before bidding. I they don't answer or are rude move on to someone else.
Some of those titles can be found kind of cheap at toy stores or W*llmart. Maybe even some of the book store chains, although many of the book stores charge too much for non-books.
Do you have any pawn shops near you? Or consignment/second hand thrift shops? Also check to see if local churches have a thrift store. They might not have the titles you are looking for but it is possible.
Near me some of the libraries sell old books and media they no longer need sometimes CD/DVD media gets included in these sales/shops. | | | CaptKiirk42 DVD Collection/ Also Klandersen at DVDAF DVDCrate Collection My Blog |

| Posted: | | | | How did The Last Samurai 085393394424 get in there? . Yes eBay may work for the used children's dvds but they may be scratched as well ., If you are just "backing them up' , why not borrow or rent them instead? You have the damaged originals as proof of ownership.. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | Good reason not to let the little crumb-crunchers touch the DVD gear...
But, as bigdaddyhorse said, very often you can get a computer burner to read the disc so you can create an ISO to burn a good copy from.
I have done this many, many times (several hundred in fact - too long a story in itself to relate here). Best results were obtained thusly:
Clean the surface with a good astringent like denatured alcohol or commercial disc cleaner. Use 'DVD Decryptor' to extract the data as an ISO file onto the hard drive. You can get that program from a number of web sites, even though it is out of production for several years. It will work on everything but the most severely damaged discs. You can also use Decryptor to burn a new disc from the ISO, and the program has other uses as well.
Alternately, you can pull the VOB files off the disc using a good video editor program. I use Ulead's VideoStudio 11.5 (about $100 online). Once you have the data files on HD, you can use them to create an ISO, and then use Decryptor to burn the new disc. VS 11.5 also burns discs, but I find Decryptor to be more robust and reliable when burning ISOs to disc.
Hope that helps you (and anybody else wanting to make copies). | | | John
