I would say you're jumping the gun.
Wait until you've got a HDTV and you'll be able to see the benefit of the improved picture.
Also, by the time you upgrade, the hardware and software should have come down in price.
Or you could also wait until the format after blu-ray comes out...

Anybody thinking that the next Blu-ray version of movie "X" will be the last time they ever buy it either hasn't been around very long or is very near retirement. 

And of course you'd need to get a 2.0 player to be "future proof"...

I posed the question on the theory that if I want to buy a film, why not buy it in the 'better' format.  If it is that clear that we have a winner in Blu Ray, when is the right time to adopt the new format.  Now or wait ?

However, and here's a another question completely, is there a GOOD Bluray player out there??  The reviews seem to tell of flakey players with numerous firmware issues.  Looks like I will wait for some 2nd generation players to come out after all.

LG and Samsung came out with a player that plays both Blu Ray and HD but it has a big price tag of $900.00us.

Pretty sure I'm going to wait for the next format, as long as they keep making SD counterparts to get me through. If SD dies completly I'll be forced and unhappy, but will cave.

Ron also has a point about the competetion and possible price increase too.

Prices won't go up..they will start to come down...one format for all means higher sales volume of the surviving format.  Higher sales volume=less cost/unit=lower price.  It's the 'Wal-Mart Syndrome'.  It's how the market works, except for gasoline 

Hmmm...tell that to the video game console makers who have a monopoly on their hardware.  Prices only go down when they've sucked the public dry at a particular price point.  Volume seems to have crap to do with it.  I forget, who makes game consoles again?
