We can use this thread as a place to report recalls, snafus, and other general erros with the new HD format's. Including, but not limited to, disc replacement programs.

Sony Pictures

The Fifth Element

Now, in an extremely rare move, Sony will not only be re-issuing 'the Fifth Element' on Blu-ray in a newly remastered version due in stores on July 17, but also offering a "Replacement Exchange Program" for owners of the original version who may be unhappy with their purchase.

Sony is currently accepting preliminary consumer information for the exchange program, and will contact interested parties closer to the release of the remastered version on exact instructions on how to exchange their discs. Simply contact the company via the email address or phone number listed below, and provide your name, mailing address, and phone number.

Phone: (800) 860-2878
Email: consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com

The new version of 'The Fifth Element' will be presented in upgraded 1080p video (no codec yet available), along with uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks. Supplemental features will remain identical to the original, now-discontinued release.

Disney

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Replacement Program

Many months after the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', an error was discovered in the framing of some scenes. To rectify this issue, Disney is offering a replacement disc with the framing corrected. Simply call their customer service line at 1-800-723-4763 (US) and you will need to provide them with your contact information. Have your copy in front of you as well, if possible.

For Canadian customers, a phone line is being set up at 1-800-877-2843.

Disney is now asking that you email them at disneyinfo@disneyhelp.com with your full name, address, disc UPC #, and phone number.

Warner Bros.

Harry Potter Gift Set

Replacement Program Implemented

As a temporary solution, Warner Home Entertainment is issuing single release replacement discs for owners who found an HD DVD version of 'Goblet of Fire' in their Blu-ray Harry Potter box sets. They will supply a boxset version of the disc, with matching artwork, to you once they have been printed. If you were affected by this, please contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Replacement Program Implemented

Confirming our suspicions, Warner Home Video is taking information to send out replacement discs for the recent Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3'. When the title is played without the In Movie Experience (IME) activated, the title plays at a maximum resolution of 1080i. Obviously, this is well short of the 1080p presentation promised on the cover. For a replacement disc, contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Blade Runner

Unfortunately, some Blu-ray fans popping in the set's fifth disc (which is meant to contain the workprint) are instead finding a mislabeled duplicate of the first disc, containing the film's final cut.

Warner has yet to comment on the 'Blade Runner' snafu, but coming only a week after some Blu-ray editions of its 'Harry Potter: Years 1-5' giftset were found to include HD DVD editions of 'Goblet of Fire,' the studio would seem to have some explaining to do.

Affected consumers can contact Warner customer support at 1-800-553-6937.

Paramount

Jack Ryan Collection

Paramount Recalls 'Jack Ryan' HD DVD

Following reports of a packaging error, Paramount has issued a recall of its forthcoming HD DVD release of 'The Jack Ryan Collection.'

As we first reported Tuesday, early copies of the highly anticipated release found their way into consumers hands earlier this week, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up a sneak peek began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.

Despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), no one was able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.

As these reports began to surface, fan reaction was swift and predominantly negative with most wondering how a mistake like this could slip by the studio.

Today, Paramount has issued a street delay for the disc, and is asking all retailers return their stock to the distributor. No new street date has been announced, and at press time it wasn't clear whether the studio is planning to ultimately release the existing barebones discs with new corrected packaging, or with new feature-packed discs. We'll let you know as more information comes in.

The text of Paramount's email to retailers follows below:

Please be advised that there are typographical errors on the packaging for the Jack Ryan Special Collector's Edition HD-DVD. The packaging inadvertently notes special features that are not on the HD-DVD. As a result, this product is being recalled and street date is being delayed. We ask that you do not sell or rent this product to consumers and that you stop shipments to additional destinations. A Paramount Home Entertainment Representative will contact you with an RA number to facilitate sending the product back to Paramount Home Entertainment's manufacturing facility. Returned product should include any unit previously shipped to retailers or other destinations as well as your on-hand inventory. We will provide further information on the availability of new product shortly. Should you have any further questions, please contact a Paramount Home Entertainment Representative. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

WTF this thread. Ok well some of it is justified. But there are certain factors to take into account here.

The source material for one thing. Robocop was a low budget film so there for it's never going to be a stellar looking movie by HD standards.

Even so it's still better than any of it's previous DVD counterparts and the audio is just awesome even if the PQ is not something on par with Iron Man or Transformers.

Another more fitting example is Gangs of New York. No other film i think can define the term digital train wreck than gangs.

Even so the Blu-ray by HD standards might look piss poor. It still looks a lot better on my 40 inch screen than blowing up the DVD to 1080p.

The only question is are you willing to pay the premium that comes at this moment in time to make that upgrade on that movie to HD.

Also in a reverse snafu, the recent represses of the Blade Runner 5-disc set have Disc 1 (The Final Cut) with the workprint version pressed on it, so you end up with two versions of the workprint and no Final Cut.

I had to exchange it twice before I received a flaw-free set. Many comments are on Amazon about the problem.

Warner quality control.

many people mistake film grain with video noise. It isn't and it is part of the original medium. Some studio use DNR to remove some of it to please the younger gen but most of the time we lose details in the process. They then boost the contrast and we end up with edge enhancement and heavy halo around the object on screen.

In short film grain isn't a defect. You can always use the built in DNR function of your player or TV if you want to remove it yourself.

Also keep in mind how this movie was made. In the case of 28 Days Later the film was shot on video in poor light, you won't get any better than what you have now. At best, you should read up a bit on the movie you are planning to buy and in some case just skip the HD version and buy the SD DVD.

Probably worth mentioning which release some of these are as if an issue has been fixed some people will be put off buying by a reported fault. Also sometimes between regions things have been fixed or different masters used.

And what is the issue with some of them? I have the HD DVD of Spartacus and it is the best it has ever looked and is probably as good as it will. An error is like the Region A POTC where there was an obvious editing problem where frames were not shown correctly. Just a poor master doesn't make something faulty.
