Not sure if this has been requested before, but I saw this nifty feature in a DVD/Book/Games collection application for Mac OS X 10.4.

Basically what it did was allowing you to use your webcamera (or in Apple's case the iSight camera) as a barcode scanner. The cool thing was that it actually worked amazingly well too. All you did was going to "Add DVD" then just held your movie with the barcode against the camera and the camera would then just take a picture of the barcode, analyze the numbers then plot it in for you. Since the barcode thing is a standarized thing all movies have their barcodes displayed the same way and with the same font type, making it very easy for the OCR reader in the program to actually identify the numbers.

Anyone like this idea? I for sure would at least like to see it in DVD Profiler in some (hopefully) near future!

Regards,
Kristoffer

This was discussed before on the old forums. The conclusion then was that it wasn't believed that it would be accurate enough.

And not as quick as using a normal bar code scanner.

However, its perfectly valid for you to request it.

Agreed. I briefly considered writing a plugin, so I experimented with the free shockwave webcam scanner. It sorta worked, but as mentioned, it was slow. It was accurate, but it was a bit tedious to get the alignment so that it would capture. Also, intergrating the shockwave/flash object was going to be more difficult than I am skilled for. If somebody finds a C#, C++ or something other than shockwave/flash -I'm willing to revisit the plugin route.

You got further than I did with the shockwave webcam. I couldn't even get it to work, so abandoned the idea right there.

Oh yeah, that would be a natural addition to your UPC plugin. Well if I find something cool, I'll give you a shout.

Sorry to bump this thread up again, but is there anyone who has a plug-in for this yet?
