| Posted: | | | | Hi all!
There's two issues with regard to the current list of Countries of Origin I would like to get your opnions on.
(1)
There are movies for which the current list holds no correct entry. An example from my own collection is "The Cup" aka "Phörpa", a film from a small country in the Himalayas called Bhutan (http://www.the-cup.com/frameset.html , click Production).
I think it would be virtually impossible to try and devise a list of all countries that have ever produced a film that has been released on DVD, so my suggestion to resolve this would simply be to add an entry "Other" to the existing list of countries.
(2)
There is an inconsistency in the list with regard to the Former Soviet Union. The current list includes two relevant entries: "Former Soviet Union" and "Estonia". This is incorrect, as Estonia was part of the Former Soviet Union as well. To be correct, the list should include either
a) Former Soviet Union only and delete Estonia - or
b) Soviet Union (without "Former") for movies from the Soviet era and create entries for all individual former Soviet republics.
For understandable reasons, option (a) might be emotionally hard to swallow for people in some countries (e.g. the Baltic states).
Option (b) would lead to a very long list of Countries of Origin.
A solution might be to use Soviet Union (for pre-1991 movies) and then the main former Soviet republics as far as movie production goes (Estonia, Russia, perhaps Georgia etc.), and then add "Other" (cf. issue #1) for the rest.
What do you thihk? |

| Posted: | | | | How about the COO field is turned into a free text field like the Edition field? So we can have the drop-down list of the most common entries, but still allow us to type in other options. That would mean we could also type in multiple countries for co-productions. |

What do you thihk? Dunno. In the current list, I think that "Estonia" would be my choice for movies from Estonia, while "Former Soviet Union" would be right for movies from any other FSU republic (Russia, Ukraina, etc.). | | | -- Enry |

That's a very good idea! No discussions about which CoO to credit first and international Co-Productions can be profiled correctly. It would really be an improvement! |

| Posted: | | | | As with languages, there is a more or less finite number of countries. I believe they should all be added. As for the FSU problem, I believe USSR and all of the former component countries should be in the list. |

Regards, AA Quite true AA, although there are still some relatively large countries not in the COO list. | | | Corey |

where are you getting that number from? iirc it's always been slightly more than 200. Not counting the gone ones obviously. Constantly changing? I doubt there have been more than a dozen new countries after the Soviet Union split up. A couple in Former Yugoslavia, Yemen split (right?), Palestina (if you count it) and probably two or three islands in the Pacific. That's about it. And the future looks even better/worse. I can't see any changes coming in the Americas, nor in Europe (well, Kosovo) or Australia. Africa, Asia and Oceania/Pacifc are not that different either. IMHO the only real "source" for new countries will be Russia where all those small republics want to split. Overall, I'd say the territorial splitting of the world is basically done. | | | - Jan |

| Posted: | | | | OK, I overestimated the whole thing vastly - the ISO-3166 counts only 262 country codes... I expect some new countries at least around near east: I can't see the Iraq to stay within its territory as one single country, the same seems to go on with Palestina, same situation with some countries in Africa... But the point is not if there is one or two countries more or less, the points are: - 261 are not representable as check box list today and - these are not all, since we have to take care of former countries too (a film produced in the USSR will never change its country of origin to any of the new SSRs...) I fail to see the use of this. Where's the difference in information provided in the profile with this addition? It doesn't make a difference if the field is empty or says "Other", you still don't know what country the movie was produced in, all you know is it's not one from the drop downs. Which is your knowledge if there's none listed. | | | Lutz |

It could also be useful whenever there's an expansion of the CoO list... you could filter by "Other" to find the ones that might now have a home. | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |
