I would really like to see a function added to create your own (LOCAL ONLY) genres.

I have a couple of sections within my collection that I have to my own preference
EG:
Superhero Films
Stephen King Films

While these have their own genres I keep them separate.

So, I would like to see the genre field be customisable....but strictly kept local only.

And please don't suggest I use tags.

I had asked a while ago (2005?) to make genres part of the personalization area, just like sort titles. That way we could have whatever we wanted, up to a point.

agreed, locally personalised sub-genres would be about the number 2 improvement to the programme for me.
And as said, away from tags would be the 'feature request'

Local program genres that would only work locally, and not actually be submitted into the normal online database would definitely be very nice.

You can already do that. You create a translation file for yourself, and you "translate" genres that you don't use. For exemple you translate "Special Interest " with "Superhero Films", then you correct the concerned profiles...  it works fine...

Could you explain how I could do this?

Don't worry...I figured out how to do it!

Thanks for the excellent suggestion! No more Special Interest, Family and Accesories for me!

You seriously don't think I'm that stupid do you Jon?

Seriously though, it's not a problem...I very rarely contribute genre changes anyway as I think they're all subjective.  But I'll make sure I don't use the ones I've changed until after any contribution!

What's wrong with tags? They do exactly what you want and you cannot contribute them accidently to the online database, because they are stored locally. Because of the tag feature, I cannot see the advantage of locally stored subgenres (especially because it will confuse some users, that some genres can be contributed and some can not).
However, displaying the selected tags for a DVD on the general info tab page of that DVD would be a nice improvement.

Discussions about genres always wind me up, because they always come to the same conclusion: "Genres are entirely personal and subjective, therefore we have to make them local". That statement is simply wrong and dilutes a very important element of film.

We all want something like this though, but there's no need to affect the genre field. What we want are not genres; they are descriptions, or categories.

But whatever you want to call them, tags are not practical. You're quite right to ignore that option Pantheon. You could end up with hundreds, scrolling mutliple pages. Managing them would be a pain the backside.

I've suggested a new feature several times which I'd love to see and is essentially a local search method. For some reason, I never even get replied to! I'll try again, just for a laugh ...

Leave the genre field alone. If anything, cut it down to be more simplistic. Add a new open text field for keywords (local only). Then just type in whatever you want, separated by commas or something.

Then you could search for all DVDs that have for example, "Hitman" or "Christmas", as a keyword. You could be as extreme as you wanted.

This isn't in any way an original idea. I've seen it featured in many places, like IMdB. That site gets a regular thrashing on these forums, but at least they understand the difference between a genre and a description.

Now, can someone tell me why this can't work? I may even agree!

Umm... Maybe there is something I'm missing here... Aren't tags supposed to do exactly that? I mean, from the tags I made, let's suppose I want to find out all the animated movies dealing with martial arts that have Jennifer Connelly nude. Ha, sure I probably wouldn't get any match, but I can just click on the tags I've made and voilà, instant results.

I don't see why it would be a pain to manage this. Every time I get a new dvd I click on the tags I believe matches that particular film or if they are not enough, I simply make some new ones for it with their respective keyword. No stress at all.

You're not missing anything. Both Pantheon's original request and my idea can be done with tags. But I don't agree it's easy. I don't think tags were intended for this scope. I don't want to scroll page after page of check-boxes. Especially when the list has a habit of expanding itself and jump scrolling.

Personally I create tags that I know are going to be used for multiple profiles. Keywords, or whatever form this idea takes, are not so guaranteed. And categories/keywords are supposed to be discrete. Tags are permanent filters, saved searches if you like.

It's hard to explain, so check pop over to IMdB, pick any title and then click a keyword. Look how many potential links it pulls up on the left. It's far bigger than most people would get near in Profiler, but the important point is how random it is. I wouldn't want a list of tags with half those entries, but they are all valid potentials.

I see what you're saying. The related links at IMDB can become pretty extensive although I wouldn't say they're random. They're just related to each other in some way but that's because their users have chosen to link them to each other. I would say that that's what happens when you get a pretty large list of movies against a hugely enormous list of keywords.

Anyway I think I'm getting your point now with the text field. It could be more simplistic to do searches that way instead of having the huge list and picking from there. Ok. You have my vote.

Cool! I suggested this at least twice back at Intervocative, but no-one ever seemed to get it. Must be the way I tell 'em ...  Now I just hijack other peoples threads!
