| Posted: | | | | I was reading on SlashDot and Sony had released some DVD titiles that won't play in certain players. Apparently it's Sony's new copy protection that's causing the problems and Sony said they will not address these discs as it is a player issue that can be resolved through a firmware update.
The discs are Casino Royale, Stranger than Fiction, and The Pursuit of Happyness Here is the link to slash dot http://slashdot.org/articles/07/04/15/1914248.shtml
link to amazon where people are talking about this http://www.amazon.com/gp/discussionboard/cd/discussion.html?ie=UTF8&asin=B000A3XRSO&store=electronics&cdThread=TxMTISI233EAQZ

Sounds like another "Root Kit" type disaster for Sony.
I have all the movies listed and relealized some of them aren't open so I checked them and they all play fine. Anyone else having or knows someone who's had a problem with these discs?
Is it me or is Sony really fu*#@&$ up lately? | | | Last edited: by graymadder |

I have a Sony player and watched Casino Royal last night with no problems other than my utter disappointment in the film . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

Sony fixes problem DVDs Copy-protection glitch reported on Casino Royale, Pursuit of Happyness others By Jennifer Netherby 4/17/2007
APRIL 17 | Sony Corp. of America says it has fixed a glitch on recent DVD releases including Casino Royale, The Pursuit of Happyness and Stranger Than Fiction that prevented the movies from playing on some DVD players.
Sony said the problem was due to an update of its ARccOS copy-protection system, an additional layer of protection meant to prevent ripping. The studio has included ArccOS on its DVDs for the past two years. The copy-protection is continually updated to keep ahead of hackers.
“Recently, an update that was installed on approximately 20 titles was found to cause an incompatibility issue with a very small number of DVD players (Sony has received complaints on less than one thousandth of one percent of affected discs shipped),” the company said in a statement. “Since then, the ARccOS system has once again been updated, and there are no longer any playability problems.”
Several hundred users complained directly to Sony and on discussion boards at Amazon.com and other blogs, saying their players were freezing or shutting off in the menu section of recent releases from the studio.
Sony is providing replacement discs to customers that have had problems. Customers can call Sony Pictures Home Entertainment customer service at 800.860.2878 for replacement discs.
ARccOS is known to have compatibility problems with some models of Sony, Toshiba and Harman Kardon DVD players. Those were the same players that users on Amazon reported problems with. http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6434584.htmlI wonder if this also means that future retail stock will feature the fixed versions, or if Sony will keep putting out the problematic master and only swapping it on a case by case basis when someone complains. | | | Last edited: by Squirrelecto |

| Posted: | | | | Sony has a history of "failures" like that. With Audio cd's they have gone so far that they are violating Red Book standards in such a way that they had to remove the CDDA logo. Quote: Philips and many other companies have warned them that including the Compact Disc Digital Audio logo on such non-conforming discs may constitute trademark infringement; either in anticipation or in response, the long-familiar logo is no longer to be seen on recent copy-protected CDs, as well as stickers and warnings that the CD is not standard and may not play in all CD players. . So it's not surprising... | | | Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: 'WOW What a Ride!!! |

| Posted: | | | | I hate to say this but if nobody sold illegal copies all these copy protections and annoying warnings wouldn't be necessary. So, the only ones who fail are the consumers who buy (litteraly and figuraly) these things. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | I had one of those copy protected CD's (well, I still have it in the pile I guess, but I am not stupid enough to play music from small plastic discs).
According to the cover, it would most likely not play in the car or on the computer.... So I tried: Car: Played OK. Computer: Played and ripped without any problem. Sony DVD player: Error - disc not recognized. | | | Regards Lars |

So, the only ones who fail are the consumers who buy (litteraly and figuraly) these things. First of all, in Holland it's not illegal to make copies for ur own use, u actually pay an extra fee on all writeable cd und dvd-roms sold. Secondly, it's the companies selling the cd's and dvd's at absurd prices that make people wonna buy illegal stuff in the first place. Prices of audio cd's for example have only gone up since the release of the cd-rom and it's not the performing artists that are making more money i can tell ya. They only receive a very small fee per cd. Audio cd's cost more then the old type records ever did and are a LOT less expensive to make. More and more bands are giving the listeners the opportunity to download their music for free cause they 2 are having problems with the absurd pricing these companies still have. If they would be priced at a normal level in accordance with production cost etc. the whole illegal market would die cause people would buy the original without hasitation. The same goes for dvd's. Furthermore, if i BUY a product i expect it to work on whatever player i want, i don't care what anyone else does, i bought the product legally and simply expect it to work. If it doesn't, for whatever reason, the product is defect. Sony has a history with "problems" like that. At least they have to warn u in advance now, that wasn't the case in the beginning. The only real solution to prevent illegal selling and copying is, like i stated before, make the price in accordance with production cost, artist fees etc. instead of selling "defective" products to costumers that have never bought or copied anything illegal. It's a disgusting, "The Good Suffer Because of The Bad" policy Sony has and has had for a long time imo. | | | Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: 'WOW What a Ride!!! |
