The announcement from Ken Cole on Feb 25 triggered a lot of jubilations from people who had missed Ken for these 6+ years. But was it actually posted by Ken  himself, of by someone else at Invelos? And what does it all mean? Well, I can only speculate.

The good news.
Investing in new servers must surely mean that Invelos isn't ready to throw in the towel on DVD Profiler.

The not so good news.
It's been more than a week, and the system is still only partially working. No further announcements. How long will this take? This is severely hurting Invelos' and DVD Profiler's reputation, something that we truly don't need right now.

The Android news.
"We're aware of the Android app absence, and will be working to resolve soon." Some have taken this to mean that the Android app will be updated to support newer phone models. While I would like to believe that it is so, I suspect that it just means that they'll try to get the same old app back on Google Play Store.

The bottom line.
I would truly like to think that the announcement was made by Ken himself. However, Ken designed the backend system, and he is the one who knows it inside and out. The fact that it takes so long to fix it makes me think that Ken is not involved. I would absolutely love it if Ken was actually back, and even more so if it meant that some updates to the programs were in the making. But alas, I am cautiously pessimistic.

What do you guys think?

The fact that DVDprofiler is custom software in itself probably makes things harder to update the backend for, as all it takes is for one of the supporting bits of software to have had a change in how it behaves under X condition for it to potentially cause an issue that'll need to be fixed.
And if this is the only place using that specific bit of code, you don't necessarily know about the issue until you've moved to the new hardware/os.

I've been on a few forums that are now in their 20th+ year and have had relatively minor customisation, often by the one guy and it's surprising how many times a change that was made 10+ years ago tends to be forgotten and cause an issue* (I hate to say it, a lot of programmers don't keep great notes for "minor" changes), and the DVD profiler system is a lot more complicated with far more records in it's DB's than most forums.

If the old hardware for this site was failing faster than planned there is a good chance that there wasn't time to do massively extensive prep.

I'm guessing Ken probably has a day job so may be limited in how much time he can spend sorting it out, and depending on what needs to be done it may require a fair bit of tracking down and double checking.
Bare in mind that the DB transfer/getting the basic site up took something like 2 days, so I doubt he's going to be in any rush to make any changes that might possibly require doing something like reimporting/rebuilding a DB, and potentially it's could take a hours/days for any change he tries on a test system to be ready.

*One had an entirely separate DB the dev forgot about for one of the add ons he'd written, it was only spotted (despite testing) when all the old hardware was turned off as the new install still referred to the original server for that one set of files.

I for one am all for Ken getting the database fully restored. Contributions appear to be going through. Although one cannot see it on the Contributions page!

I too think the old hardware and code maybe a problem. I work in the Telecommunications industry, and I have to deal with equipment that is been in use longer than the 35 years I have been there. In fact, some equipment the only person who understood it died years ago and we have to make do with his cheat sheets.

To the question as to whether we get an update, I think that will not happen.

So best wishes to Ken to get things sorted.

HI,
Today I just tried to add new titles to my colllection but is is still not possible. DVD Profiler (Windows) keeps being stuck while trying to connect to Invelo's servers.
Had no other solution than manually force DVD profiler to close, which then implies a check and fix of my local database.

I had the same thoughts but didn't want to be a Debbie Downer. Of course, any actions or upgrades are good regardless of who does it. I'll continue to hope for the best.

We must not forget what Ken did, how he functioned, and how abruptly that changed. In my opinion, Ken is doing everything he can do, and what he is not doing could be for any number of reasons that make no sense to speculate on, because we are likely never to know more than what Invelos tells us. But in my opinion, the answer is not simple or obvious.
Thanks for your support.

I don't believe that to be the case.

So, is the Online Database coming back, or......?
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

It's back, you can submit contributions, and contributions prior to the crash are now being approved.

Of course! 20 minutes after I typed that. Which wouldn't have happened if I had not said anything.
