Whatever it has got now is awesome. xXx Xander Cage has sounds coming out of every crevice of my room ... you find yourself turning your head as something buzzes by ...) My HDMI issues are settling down, but the mass of cables and extra devices (switcher, splitter, Oppo in the middle) is a major PITA. I'm thinking about selling some old gear to collect some funds to accelerate the new receiver purchase (I like the Denon better than Onkyo this time.) One issue, using 2-way 4K splitter eliminates sound going to my TV. Maybe because the handshaking sees a projector with no sound along with the TV. Of course the receiver gets the sound from the Oppo multi-channel output. If I plug the TV directly into the Oppo, instead of using the splitter, I get sound from the TV as well as from the receiver. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. | Posted: | | | | Firmware update done. fast. Easy. Watching Xander again. Do I see any difference? I would be lying to try and pretend to remember what the previous looked like, but all I can say is: what I see now is truly stunning.
Just reading reviews of Denon vs Onkyo (again) and there is whole rats nest of HDMI issues. Complaints on both sides, relative to the number of 2.2 ports, and HDR passthru.
My venerable TX-NR3008 has been repaired twice under warranty years ago - and has been rock solid in every way since. Rave reviews from all guests. I think I'll hang tight until the industry gets some of the handshaking issues resolved. I wish somebody made an affordable a/v front-end with multi-channel output, so I could just use the solid Onkyo audio section. But the ones I've seen are actually more expensive than a full receiver. Go figure. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

| Posted: | | | | Still pulling my (remaining) hair out ...
- HDMI handshaking is all over the floor - Multi-channel output limits my ability to apply sound shaping. I watch a lot of videos with wide variations in codecs, etc., so I like to tailor for my ears.
Keep coming around to the sad conclusion that the only way I am going to avoid manually (un)plugging cables when the handshaking fails, is to get a new receiver. We have been totally %$^$ by the industry - again.
Meanwhile, the performance of the individual items is amazing ... they just don't play together without a central hub. I think I have a good 4K switch, and a good splitter - when they work ...
That being said, I think the major culprit is the Oppo. It is very sensitive to how / when something is plugged into the output. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

| Posted: | | | | Yeah, HDMI handshaking issues can be a nightmare and very difficult to trace and resolve at that. And you can't even be sure that getting a new receiver will solve your problems. I'd recommend reading around on the Oppo 203 threads on AVS Forums and AVForums to see what others are experiencing in terms of what works and what doesn't. |

Today I got the bright idea to challenge my assumption that a couple of my older cables were OK. I bought a bunch of new ones for the short connections, but I had convinced myself that the (expensive) long run cables to the projector and TV were OK. WRONG! When I noticed some funny business, I set the Oppo to force UHD, and suddenly I lost the projector image. TV was OK. When I replaced the cable going from the splitter to the projector, all my problems magically disappeared! (Yeah, I know you knew it was the cables - just didn't want to embarrass me. ) Think I'll go ahead and incrementally replace all remaining older HDMI cables in my system. Much cheaper than buying a new receiver! | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

What you need to check is that they are premium certified cables. Yeah, got it. Didn't mean it that way. But I do pay for durability, reliability and low loss over long length. So the long cables that I have were expensive, partly due to the length, and partly due to the heavy duty construction to stand up to my constant rewiring and snaking around corners, under furniture, etc. I bought them way before all the new standards. I'm aware of the "audiophile cable" scams. I recently had a problem where a value priced certified cable wasn't seating properly. Turns out it was not the cable itself, but a cheap logo sticker that dislodged and got stuck on the plug, preventing proper insertion. Part of what you pay for is build quality (it was an Amazon Basics cable). | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! | Posted: | | | | I fully understand. And especially over long distances, build quality can indeed make a difference. Hopefully at some point you'll be able to break the habit of constant rewiring... |

| Posted: | | | | Ok, continuing to beat this poor horse, I got new cables for the long runs - 10 ft to the projector and 15 ft to the HDTV, and all pics and sound 4K Krispy and Klean, and all handshaking smoooooth! | | | Thanks for your support. I played with it, but always came back to the original preset. It seems to work best on average. I played with the first setting, which I think is call screen brightness (80) and uped it to (85), but some scenes get to bright, so I put it back. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |
