| | Posted: | | | | I use to have an about 18'x10' wall section covered with DVD height shelves full of DVDs. Now my DVD are in double sided CD/DVD friendly padded enveloppe and stored in 4 metal boxes made to fit any bookshelves. The box cost about $9.99 and a pack of 50 enveloppe can be bought for about $6.00 at business depot. I Can fit about 200 DVD in one box and 4 box fit on a standard bookshelf section.
I've numerated the enveloppe and assigned that number to the movies in DVD Profiler.
The only DVD that I keep in their original cases are the one I haven't watched yet or the ones with "collector" cases.
I do have one 4'x10' wall section left for those collectors edition and for my growing Blu-Ray collection. | | | | Last edited: by Tuxon86 |

| | Posted: | | | | I think I found the solution to my storage problems. I have a huge VHS & DVD collection and shelving was a major problem until I began to digitize. Now I have all my movies on external hard drives on two 4 foot shelves. Over 4,200 movies right at my fingertips. All the originals are in the garage in boxes (I think). I can locate & play any movie in less than a minute with no wear & tear or damage to tapes or discs and nothing gets misplaced or lost. Now this is a real home theater system.... |

As I do with my about 200 HD-DVD's.. All the normal DVD's are in a closed shelf.. | | Posted: | | | | Also you wanted to know what format I use. I keep them in ISO (.iso) format and my son keeps his in computer folders. It makes little difference because all Computer Media Players still see the files in DVD and Blu-Ray format. No change is made to the files so it looks just like the original disc. Also I Store just the movie without the previews and menu's unless there is something special I want to keep. Really Neat!! |

Funny thing is that i've found 2 types of sleeves that are even close to something i could use. The other one costs .50 and the other 1$ per DVD  Personally i'm in the process of making 3 boxes that go under the bed. Each will hold approx 240 DVD's. The wood, wheels and screws cost me 80e, so it'll be 11 cents per DVD. Ill post some pictures when their finished. But i find your idea very intresting. Though the discspace for BD's would be too much for me. But on DVD's its not that expensive anymore. | | | | Last edited: by whispering |

All I have to do is select the movie cover from the screen and push play on my Harmony remote. There is no hassle and the movie starts playing in about 5 seconds.
I still have room on my RAID box for about 800 movies. I do not put BD or TV series on the box, just standard DVDs. Each movies takes about 3.36 gig. I store only the movie and no extras. |

This is the direction I ultimately intend to move in, however disc storage still hasn't caught up to my needs. I'm figuring I'm going to need to put together about a 15 TB RAID to store it all. A few more years ought to do it though. |

| | Posted: | | | | Yeah, I'm figuring I need the capacity to get to about 4 TB per in order to put together a nice RAID 5 for a 15 TB yield. I like to keep my raid volumes to 5 drives so I'm thinking a couple more years and I should be in business. Were those WDs SAS drives? I'm not that excited about the idea of building a RAID with SATA drives. The things will be failing on me before I finish populating the dataspace.  | | | | Last edited: by mdnitoil |
