They're scheduled to deliver mid next week. I'm not too keen on the particle board construction either but I'm tired of tripping over my collection and the price fits into my budget right now. I'll let you know how they work out. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | AvAddict,
That is definetly the NICEST dvd storage solution I've seen. Did you buy it or did you make it? Because if you made it I bet you could go in business. Its nice. If you bought it, where did you get it? |

| Posted: | | | | Actually, I had a friend make it. I looked forever for a good solution and couldn't find one that would hold more than 1000 DVDs in their original cases. Everything was commercial shelving...not so wife-friendly. So I have a friend with a wood shop in his garage. I drew up some sketches and he went to town building it. Took one week to make all the parts....and then 3 months to put all the stain and clearcoats on.
I did check with local custom cabinet makers, and a few said they could do it for about the same cost...but there was a 1 year wait because they were booked doing other things.
It was about $2000 in materials....but most of that was that oak is expensive. Could have gone with something cheaper. |

| Posted: | | | | I talked to the builder. He said if there is interest he might be willing to either put together blueprints with parts lists/costs for a nominal fee. He might also be willing to build them to custom sizes depending on how many DVDs you wanted to hold. But if he builds them, they will be "naked"...he says it is too much trouble to stain them without a dust-free stain room and he is just doing this in his garage. Shipping would probably be something like LTL Yellow Freight or a moving company...UPS isn't going to touch something this massive. If anyone wants to design and build their own and just wants to ask for some pointers on everything we learned building mine, let me know. I think we found just about all the bad/wrong ways to go about it. |

| Posted: | | | | TV: Toshiba 32HL57 (new as of this past Saturday)DVD-R/VCR: Toshiba D-VR6 upconverting DVD-Recorder & VCR. (new as of this past Sunday )Left & Right Speakers: Mission 760i (bought in 1992 and they still sound fabulous)Centre Speaker: Mission 70c1 (I bought this & the surrounds 3 years ago to replace the cheap-ass Sony speakers I had been using since the early days of pro-logic)Surround Speakers: Mission M70 Amplifier/Receiver: Yamaha RXV-1600 LD Player: Sony MDP-510 (I always wanted a laserdisc player when I was younger, but could never justify the cost of the player or the discs. I finally bought this one off E-Bay a couple years ago for a whopping $30 (plus $50 to ship it up from the States) )HTPC: custom-built 2 GHZ pentium on a Shuttle SS51G using Media Center 2005 Satellite Receiver 1: Expressvu 9200 PVR dual HDTV Tuner with additional ATSC tuner built-in (yes boys and girls I can record three HD programs simultaneously )Satellite Receiver 2: Expressvu 5800 PVR (and still watch or record the Hockey game in SD )Mindisc Player: Sony MDS-JE440 (Dang it, I still think Mini-discs are cool....of course I never seem to use them anymore CD Player: Sony CDP-CE245 5-disc player The heart of the system is really the Yamaha. Its kicks major tail. HDMI compatible (1.1) it has a literal plethora of connection possibilities and it upconverts everything to the Component and HDMI outputs (480P). It also cross-converts the component, composite & s-video connectors which was great when I was still using my top-of-the-line (in 1992) Sony 27" television. It is even works as an XM satellite tuner if you buy the optional antenna. Better still, the remote (the design of which I found initally off-putting, but am now well-used to) is a learning remote that controls literally everything...even the HTPC. (NOTE: I should have said everything that could be controlled. The Sony CD-Player is not remote-operable. It is an interim solution that I bought off e-bay for a ridiculous $25 CDN including shipping when my nifty 200-disc Kenwood died. I am only keeping it until I figure out what I want to do long-term about playing CDs...specifically my opera cds which cover multiple discs per opera....but I am digressing badly...sorry about that....back to our regularly scheduled bragging) Still, its replacement from Yamaha, the RXV-1700 is even better it has HDMI 1.2 and can connect to an optional IPod dock....the last would have been handy. Not that I am complaining. |
