I found that if I tried to connect wireless to wireless, IE the host laptop and the iPad both wireless through the router, then it never worked.
As soon as I hardwired the laptop into the router, worked instantly.
Also had a few occassions when sync failed, but was usually when I rotated the iPad during sync, and the orientation changed. Seemed to drop the connection. Just LOCKED the rotation and resynced OK.
