| Posted: | | | | There is a little known feature of BulkEdit called "ScrapeGoat" which allows you to grab public profiles from any user's online, by scraping the HTML. Of course, you get no personal data this way.
Just FYI. I am testing it on your collection. I would be curious how many I can grab. It will probably run for several hours. I know you have a backup. This is just a fun exercise for me.
Update: I stopped the agonizingly slow process at about 7,000 profiles. But it does show that in a desperation scenario, there is a process (scraping UPCs from the web site HTML) that still beats typing in thousands of UPCs. Perhaps we should request Invelos to make a standalone recovery service available (small fee?) that could retrieve a database from the online, if all else fails, once a person provided credentials. | | | Thanks for your support. It did take forever on my older computer though. The catch is that for me it wouldn't be just the Backup time, but also the Restore time on the second computer. Just out of curiosity I tested it this morning (i.e. your middle of the night ). I added my latest Blu-ray and then made a complete database repair, which means every file is touched and has to be sync'd. Technical info: The database contains 4008 profiles. It's stored on an SSD drive. I generated the backup file on a secondary disc (SATA). The sync to the USB thumb drive is done via USB 2.0. The synchronization to the thumb drive included 98 files (of which about 50 were new or updated headshot images) took 1m 16s. After that, I just changed a few tags on my newest profile and synced it again to the USB drive. It took a mere 25s. The creation of the backup file (which does not include the headshot images (not the kind that is embedded in that database itself but rather the ones in the headshots folder) took 4m 52s. The restoration of the backup file into a new, empty database (i.e. what I'd have to do every time I wanted to sync these two not networked computers) took 11m 49s. I'm not saying my solution is for everyone. If you just want to backup and store the backup file for data safety reasons, the backup option is OK. But if you need to sync between two computers, using a file-based synchronization is a lot faster than backup/restore. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

I have to ask the question...if it's been answered, I didn't see it. When you enter new discs into your database, do you then reupload your collection to invelos? If you do not, then the online will only be to the point you last uploaded it. If, for example, you have entered 25 new discs in the your collection but have not uploaded to invelos, then those 25 would not be available for you to download from your online collection.

Invelos support is working on fixing the problem - it seems they can get my collection back to April 4th.
I'll be happy with that - there's no way I want to figure out and add 2,000+ missing DVDs. |

Edit: Ok, I think I see the problem: your info page claims you have 16,000+ profiles, yet there are only 14000+ listed in the actual web pages. So I think I get what you are talking about. They must correspond to what you have on the old computer, and indeed those other 2,000 profiles are mysteriously not available in the public online. Are there 2,000 profiles blocked by your privacy rules? I'm sure that it couldn't be that simple ... because, then the public total wouldn't include them I think. | | | Thanks for your support. No problem, but just FYI in the future, my tool simply loads the HTML and caches the text after navigation in a "Document Completed" handler. That takes all of a few seconds. Then all the processing is done against the cached data on the PC, so there has been only minimal hit on the web site. Calling it "scraping" was probably a misnomer on my part, since the load is exactly the same as viewing the collection with a browser. Just making it clear. Invelos support has spent a lot of time and energy addressing and fixing the problems of a single community member. I would like to publicly thank Ken and invelos support.
