| | Posted: | | | | I would like to thank everyone for their replies. As far as the DVDP database itself, I ran the repair and the database looks fine. I also "unselected" the extra REGIONS in the TOOLS tab and there was no change.
So, I installed DVD Profiler on my Win7 desktop at work and restored my current database. I restarted DVDP and it only took 20 seconds!!! I shut it down and restarted and again it only took about 20 seconds. On my home desktop, I installed a fresh copy of Win7 to a different partition (dual-boot) and I brought that up and installed DVDP. Now it only takes 10 seconds to start up on a bare installation.
I believe that it is safe for me to conclude that there is something else running on my original system that is causing DVDP to take 120 seconds to start up.
When I look at the CPU Monitor gadget, about 5 or 6 cores are eating up CPU, especially cores 3 and 5 which remains constant at about 80% until DVDP is fully up.
According to Task Manager, DVDP uses 13% of the CPU to initialize.
When I shutdown DVDP the CPU monitor also goes wild and it takes about 20 seconds before DVDP is fully terminated.
I doubled the size of the paging file but that made no difference.
Also, if I go read my email or browse the web and go back to DVDP, it takes about 60 seconds for it to reload the window. |

When a clean install takes much less time to load and it cannot be contributed to a slow disk etc. fragmentation on the old install is many times one of the main reasons for speed delays. (BTW another one is usually a huge clutter of temp files never deleted).
Each time you refresh for updated profiles the onlinelist.dod file is updated by the program. It resides NOT with your database files but in the (user name)\AppData\Local\DVD Profiler folder, which usually is on your c: drive. I found that with refreshing for updated profiles each day, this file already becomes heavily fragmented in 2 or 3 weeks.
If your database files have not been defragmented in along while, try those too.
If you only use the regular Win7 defragmentation this'll be slow. Personally I regularly use programs from Piriform. First CCleaner to remove the clutter of temp files and really old restores. Then Defraggler to analyse and defrag files. Since Defraggler can defrag single files, you could single out the above mentioned profiler files to try. BTW, there are of course also other defragmentation programs that can defrag on a file by file basis, but the piriform programs are the ones I use. These are freeware in the basic setup, which I find sufficient. | | | Eric

| | Posted: | | | | Thanks for the information. I checked the DVDP folder in AppData and most of the files were heavily fragmented as you mentioned. I used the two utilities - CCleaner and Defraggler - to clean out unused files
and defrag the DVDP files and there was no change in the startup time - still about 116 seconds.
I have installed about 50% of my other applications to my new WIN7 install and DVDp is still initializing in about 10 seconds!!!! |

I'm not sure, but some Anti-virus softwares are set to check every file on opening or when something is written on the HDD. Could you check which process in the task manager is so occupied when starting profiler? |

| | Posted: | | | | The software comes with two pre-installed by Invelos (go to "Tools -> View Plugins") but still it is a bit odd that everything takes so long.
By comparison, here is mine. I have one additional plugin installed. (Now I wish i had saved a copy from an older XP system that had only 768MB or RAM. It loaded a lot slower for obvious reasons.)

| | Posted: | | | | 3.4ghz P4 Northwood w/ HT, 2gb PC3200 in dual channel configuration, 80gb WD SE IDE hard drive (84% free), NVidia GeForce 6600LE 256mb AGP, Windows XP SP3 (all updates), 21 total processes running (incl. AS/AV software), cleaned up & defragged regularly, 0% CPU usage while idle, with 659 titles (counting TV seasons as 1) DVD Profiler used to take about 35 seconds to load (dammit).
Unchecking all but Region 1 shaved the time down a few seconds. Did a database repair (even though there wasn't really anything wrong), DVD Profiler now takes 23 seconds to load on a fresh reboot (first time load), subsequent load times are about 15 seconds which is considerably faster than it's ever been. I don't want to hobble DVD Profiler by doing any registry alterations, I think I can live with 23 seconds first time loading DVDP. It's possible that you don't see "AppData" in your users folder. Click into the adress bar until it becomes plain text and simply copy the path above and replace <your user> with your actual user name.
