Well, it's not like HD DVD players have suddenly ceased to exist.  And it's a digital format, so the quality isn't going to fade over the years (unlike VHS tapes or the like).  As someone already mentioned, it wouldn't be too difficult to go out and find an HD DVD player a year from now or 10 years from now.  I would bet I could go on eBay right now and find a working 8-track player, or a vinyl record player, or a laser disc player.  Heck, you could even find a working Betamax VCR player.

I just find it interesting how a lot of people have changed their thinking since the start of the HD format war.  It's funny how time changes some people's position on things.

I sold a 'non working' Betamax player a couple years back,, I had the ebay posting saying it was 'non working' , 'didn't  play etc'' ,, but the buyer wanted the units for parts..

It seems that you can't get service from Toshiba anymore, at least not in Sweden. Instead they will simply credit you the money you paid for the player (if you bought it within the last year). But I have already secured a backup player in case mine breaks down, and I'm sure there will be second hand players on the market years from now. You could probably still buy a laserdisc player if you wanted. My very first DVD player, bought in March 2000, is still in working condition despite seeing heavy use, so I'm not that worried though. And in time there will be new editions of the movies that I'll want to get anyway so what happens in the distant future is of little significance. If nothing else, I will have a part of history.

That's kinda strange that you don't get service from Toshiba anymore. It's only been since march since they stopped making players. They have to provide service by law.. Also what do you do when you have over 100 movies and your player breaks.. That's just not fun..

that was the point I was making. I just couldn't understand why people would be happy to have lots of films on HD-DVD when it was a dead format and there wouldn't be any new machine being made.

Yeah but they are obliged to provide spare parts.. I hope that my player holds for another 10 years or so.. and if it breaks I will find a new one.. Also there are enough shops that can repair stuff like that.. I still buy HD-DVD movies btw. I just bought the whole Harry Potter Series for less than 35€

I would say time warner killed it but it was destined to fail from the start. How can you win without having the majority of the industry behind you.. But still shortly before the announcement by Warner the sales were 45% HD and 55% Blu Ray.. So there really wasn't that much difference..

I still find HD-DVD was a great format. Sadly it had 20 GB less space than a BD. On the other hand it was a finished product when it came out and you didn't need BD Live to access internet features.. .. But all that is moot now.. I have my 150+ HD-DVD Movies and hope that my player will hold.. if not I'll get a new one.. There will always be ways to get one..

Well, Toshiba in Sweden seem to be incompetent (or lacking the resources to repair their stuff). But at least they didn't sell crap like the Samsung BD1200 player which should never have been released. I'll never buy a Samsung BD player again, I'm now looking at the Panasonic BD50 to replace it. It's a pity the LG BH200 was never released here, I would have wanted one.

I love my Toshiba XE1 and hope it holds together for many years but I have a spare E35 just in case...

I myself have a Samsung BD-P 1400. Which I tested at the store where I work. I am very happy with it. The only downside so far. I had the demo machine running in the store 10 hours a day. The first 1400 made it about a month. The second one about 2 weeks. It might have been that they were positioned to close to the receiver. (An Onkyo 606). Maybe the heat killed them. Now I have a Samsung BD-P 1500 hooked up at the company. It works fine. This time it put it down next to the receiver and not on top of it. (In my defense I put about 2 cm high spikes between the Receiver and the Blu Ray Players). Still, it might have been the heat. We sell a lot of Samsung Stuff at the Store and actually have very little problems with them. I myself also have a Samsung TV.

As for Toshiba, my boss used to work there so I asked him to try and get me a replacement machine in case my EP-30 ever breaks. I am now up to 151 HD-DVD's and it would really be a shame if I couldn't watch those anymore.
Also I still love HD-DVD and want to enjoy my movies for years to come.

I heard about that before. I really don't see how they wanna get more out of DVD Content that a good upscaling DVD Player already can. They should rather produce one HD-DVD Player so that the hundreds of thousands of people who still own HD-DVD's can buy something if their player breaks.

Also this technology is supposed to cost about $150. You can get a good Blu Ray Player for about $250. And in the US the prices for regular DVD's and Blu Rays are already pretty darn close.

So I really see no future in that new toshiba venture

You know I keep reading where people claim how close Blu-Rays are priced to DVDs, but yet I have yet to find this anywhere!!!  On release day at my local Best Buy, I can get a DVD on sale for $16.99, most of the time, but they never cost more than $19.99, yet the same movie released on Blu-Ray seem to be $29.99!!!

Also please list this good Blu-Ray players that you can get for under $250???  So far, from everything I have read, the PS3 is still the player to get, which boggles my mind that 3 years into Blu-Ray the Sony video game console remains the Best Blu-Ray player anyone can get under $499!!!

And I watch for the blu ray offers on Amazon or theHut etc..

Well at release Cloverfield on Blu-Ray was not cheaper than on DVD!!!  Can you occassionally find deals on Blu-Ray...sure, Amazon is running a discount (I think 50% off) right now, however, having used price watcher, some of those BDs actually went up vs. the price a week ago, so the discount comes after a slight increase!!!

All I am saying is that DVD is still considerably cheaper despite the deals you can find on BDs with patience and diligence, to say otherwise is naive!!!

Are all blu rays the same standard cost as dvds - No.

But what I was doing was replying to your comment that there were none that were close in price - when in fact they are if you shop around.

I'm at work so I don't have access to the prices that I paid - but I'll put these up this evening. And yes - Cloverfield was cheaper in blu ray than the DVD price I found at the time.

And I don't buy blu ray at release..

Actual price paid

Bladerunner 5 disc collection - £13.80
Cloverfield                          - $26.43      (current DVD price £11.99 but it was more when I bought
                                                          the Blu ray)
Dark City                            - £11.37
Fifth Element                    -  £10.10
Hellboy                            -  £8.99
Casino Royale                    -  £8.99
Replacement Killers            - £13.96
Resident Evil                      -  £14.12
Terminator chronicles          - $31.98
Underworld                      - £10.10
X-Men 3                            - £10.00

Yeah, I don't know about Blu-ray, but HD DVD was always way overpriced at BB; sometimes well over MSRP.  I don't understand how they sold a single disc.
