| Posted: | | | | I haven't had my HD DVD player long enough (or played enough movies with PiP to know for sure) but the one I played had a fixed PiP screen (this was 300). It shifted the letterboxed movie up to the top portion of the screen and played the PiP at the bottom left, but I don't recall it shifting around to different corners based on the content it was displaying. I think that's a pretty nifty feature mentioned in the BD article (and for all I know HD DVD can do it as well), it's just a shame that Blu-ray is wasting the first movie ever with this feature on Resident Evil: Extinction. I mean, really? Are people really going to buy this title just because it's the first profile 1.1 disc?
Anyway, I don't really get the last couple pages of talks over which side sold how many discs of this or that movie. Each side has completely different movies, different fan bases, so how does comparing sales numbers really show anything as far as which side is better or sells for discs or ultimately, which is the better format. Transformers versus PotC? Big robots versus Pirates? Even in regular SD versions, the sales numbers will vary greatly. And with Bourne especially. Sure, it's PG-13 but it's still mainly an adult movie and not that many kids will be into it. Big robots.. Pirates.. ya, they'll like those a bit more. I might be speaking for myself, but the only movies that count for me, as far as numbers to look at to see which side is selling better, would be movies that are released in both formats. Comparing anything else is pretty pointless. With that in mind, I'm very much interested in how the sales numbers are going to look for the re-release of Bladerunner. I've had my HD DVD version on pre-order since like 3 months ago (the briefcase edition) and Amazon is showing it's soldout, but I'm still hoping it will ship tomorrow like they say it will. Anyway, a release like this in both formats are the ones to watch for. Obviously, I've already decided to go HD DVD, but I'm still interested to see how the sales go on the Blu-ray side. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

could you please stop posting any new entries to this topic, at least over the holidays? With over 2600 posts to this thread my nerd-tolerance-level gets seriously lowered. There are about 6 people on here who care for this and all they ever seem to do is to bitch about who's getting to win the format war. Nobody else cares. It's just completely boring even contemplating to discuss who will win, as HD and Blue-Ray seem to be roughly the same side of the medal anyway, not doing something really new for the media we all love. Sure, we are waiting for the winner to emerge from the geekmud, but only so we can pass the time till dvds are completely obsolete after all, in the sweet near future, when every movie you ever wanted can be downloaded in prestine quality from the net and stored on really safe external harddisks that save so much wall space for sugary family photos. Go out, geeks, have some fun, be merry, and let the industry decide who will be the next Laser-Disc.

The Matrix HD DVD PiP displays the SFX features bottom left and interviews on bottom right, so HD DVD is capable of this also. The Heroes discs display content in the upper left and upper right and upper middle (and all at the same time). That's in addition to the lower right. I don't think HD DVD is limited to a specific spot on the screen. And I also don't think it's a given that it shrinks the main display to show the alternate source. I don't watch many bonus features, but I think it can overlay anything, anywhere with or without shrinking the main feature. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. The movie was already presented letterboxed, so what it did was shift the main display up so there was twice as much black space at the bottom and then it stuck the PiP down there. The PiP still overlayed the main display just a tad bit, but I thought it was a pretty eloquent way to do it. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams | | | Last edited: by Vega |

Love, Monty Thanks for making the 2601 post And if you actually think harddrives are the safe way to store whatever you should get the medal for making the most stupid post off all 2601 posts | | | Jean-Paul |

- Home Media Magazine Dec 11, 2007
Author: ERIK GRUENWEDEL
A new study says 43% of shoppers looking to buy a high-def DVD player are leaning toward HD DVD, compared to 27% for Blu-ray. The remaining 30% are undecided. The study claims price — not technology — is the determining factor for post-early adopters of high-def packaged media.
