See...citing DVD is doing this and DVD is doing that brings the history of DVD into the argument.  Citing where DVD is now means it had to come from somewhere.  That means it has an origin.  Without understanding this first, you will never understand the "100,000 copies of a title shipped" concept.  According to various sources, DVD was the fastest growing format ever.  So DVD, being the fastest growing format ever, SHIPPED 100,000 copies of a title 11 months after launching.  Blu-ray accomplished this very same task in 9 months.  Logically, that should tell you Blu-ray is on track to becoming the fastest growing format ever.  Could that change in the future?  Of course it could!  But, for now, Blu-ray is ahead of DVD's timeline.  And, there is nothing meaningless about that.

Please try to remember the context.  Fair and accurate time comparisons are what's relevant.  The fact is that if Blu-ray continues to meet or beat DVD's timeline, it WILL be the next format.  HD DVD still has yet to accomplish anything on DVD's time scale except launch.  I has already failed to meet the 100,000 copies of a title shipped milestone within the allotted time period.  HD DVD's anniversary is in 3 days.  I'm not sure that they will ship 100,000 copies of "The Matrix Collection" in a month.  If they don't, this will be very, very sad indeed for the format.

Beta had a lot larger percentage of the home market than when that started.  That's definitely not saying much.  There were also not exclusives in that format battle until the porn industry joined the mix.  And, since just about the only way a get porn at the time was through VHS, it ended that format war.  So, Sony quit making their BETAMAX player/recorder for consumers.

That is definitely your choice.  Personally, I'm enjoying the Blu-ray format greatly and will probably enjoy it for at least an additional 10 years.  As far as me not having major studios exclusive HD DVD titles...it's not bad at all.  I will only be missing under 12.5% of the total HD titles available.

Don't worry, I will enjoy all this great HD for those that aren't ready for it!

Didn't Amir hint that VC-1 was better than AVC?  Supposedly, MS created and are perfecting VC-1.  Didn't he say they are continuing to push VC-1's bitrates further and further down beyond AVC?  If the two codecs are basically identical, how can that be possible?  It seems the Sony has more patent rights to VC-1 than MS does.

This is kind of like the HD DVD group saying it is sooo much more expensive to make Blu-ray discs when the costs seem to be similar.

The organized buy has temporarily pushed Planet Earth in the top 5 sales and boosted all the HD DVD sales up past Blu-ray on Amazon.
