Some of you guys give a WHOLE NEW meaning to being blind.  You won't even acknowledge that HD DVD has AT LEAST as many problems as Blu-ray.  It's really a shame.  It's been WAY past the point of being funny quite some time ago.

I love that fact that some of you judge SO fairly. /sarcasm

twojayz, you need to re-read your post.  You inferred that it was the larger manufacturer support that was a big thorn in Blu-ray's side.

A_S, you're the one who seems unable to acknowledge that blu-ray has any problems!

Asc... I didn't infer anything. I said that when something goes wrong for BD it involves a considerably larger number of product manufacturers. There isn't consistency amongst hardware. That has been a thorn in the side of BD.

The USA Today article for those that dod not venture over there...

Quote:

Bay says 'Transformers' DVD could have been better

Transformers director Michael Bay says the newly released DVD isn't as good as it could've been.

Most directors diplomatically go to bat for DVDs of their films. Filmmaker Michael Bay (Armageddon, Bad Boys, The Rock) is just as likely to drop verbal bombs while talking about his DVDs as when he is directing.
Bay's take on the new Transformers DVD, which has sold 8.3 million copies since its release last week: "It's a good DVD. But not as good as it could have been," he says. That sales total made Transformers the year's fastest-selling DVD in North America, according to Paramount Home Entertainment.

Despite setting a record, Bay, 42, says a hectic studio schedule prevented him from being as personally involved in the DVD as he was back in the days of Pearl Harbor. His 2002 four-disc director's cut of that film set the standard for buffed-up special editions.

"I was traveling promoting (Transformers) while they were doing the DVD," he says. "You try to guide people as to what to do (in making it), but ultimately if you rush your date, you are not going to get the DVD as good as it could be. … Studios want to pump this stuff out, and my job is to care about it and try to put the right people on it. They just see it as a show they are selling, and I see it as a movie. That's how your movie lives on, in the DVD format."

An aspect of the DVD that Bay says he personally fought for was having the film be on a disc by itself, with just a commentary. He won that battle in the $20 single-disc version that hit shelves last week along with a deluxe, two-disc $40 version.

The two-disc set has many bonus features:

•Producer Steven Spielberg talks about wooing Bay to direct. "Michael Bay was born to direct Transformers," he says on the DVD. "He was the perfect fit for this concept."

Early on, Spielberg knew that he had made a good choice. "Michael staged huge, logistically complicated scenes of massive destruction and explosions, and even when I was watching those dailies without the actual Transformers there, it was just eye candy," he says.

•Also covered in the filmmaking extras are Bay's dealings with the military, toy company Hasbro and General Motors, which supplied many of the vehicles. An Easter egg on the DVD is a "Bay Bot," a Transformer robot with Bay's face. "(Hasbro) made that for me, but I didn't know it was going to be on the DVD," Bay says.

•An anatomy of a scene details how Bay and the crew created the desert attack by the scorpion-like Skorponok. Filming that scene early on convinced Bay that the Transformers movie could work. "As soon as I saw how violent and vicious it was and we added a rough visual effect to it, I said, 'Oh my, I get it,' " he says.

Transformers is the first major film to arrive on HD DVD ($40) since partners Paramount and DreamWorks joined that side of the high-definition video disc format war. Universal also makes its films available exclusively on HD DVD. Sony, Disney and Fox support rival Blu-ray Disc, while Warner releases on both formats.

Bay caused a brouhaha on his blog (michaelbay.com) by voicing his displeasure that Transformers would not be available on Blu-ray and that he was rethinking his plan to direct a sequel. The next day he backpedaled, but he is still upset about the format war.

"It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video)," he says. "As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out."

The HD DVD version also set a new mark. Its 190,000 copies sold is the best debut of any high-def disc.

Bay expects the cast to return for Transformers 2, which is targeted for June 25, 2009. The first film's take recently surpassed $700 million worldwide, and it has reached No. 18 on the all-time U.S. box office chart and No. 28 internationally.

"It just caught on in our culture, and I am excited to do the second one," he says. "There are so many different and innovative ways you could have fun with this movie."

Anyone that can read should know that's not true.  All people have to do is read my posts over the last 3 pages or so.

On the other hand, getting HD DVD supporters to acknowledge there are, at least, an equal amount problems seems like an impossible task.

Here is an interesting exchange between Amir and Richard (he released Nature's Journey on HD DVD and BD).

Quote:
Let's get the facts straight.

1 - If you are talking about MS as the "Key Technology Supplier" .... I did contact you and your team's follow-up was horrible. By the time I heard form "Amy" ... which was a long, long, long time after our initial contact ... the encodes were done ... and I had moved on. You make it sound like we never spoke....this is misinformation.

2 - I did have my lab contact your team to discuss the encodes. They consulted and there was communication...albeit not with me directly. MS did have input with my team. To state otherwise is misinformation.

3 - What is it that MS can for me that Technicolor, Deluxe, or any other 3rd Party Lab cannot do? I see no advantage to working with MS unless the encodes are free...

4 - You make it sound like this was shot and produced as the Ultimate HD release. It was not. The project being shot interlaced has nothing to do with me. This content was already in the can when I decided to acquire and develop this title. Once again, misinformation.

5 - Interlaced or not...the content looks great and the artist is very talented with Video Capture, CGI, and Enhancements. The artist is also very technical...far more so than most experts I know. I can also state with confidence that Nature's Journey features some of the best looking Interlaced content I have seen.

6 - I would like to see your comments on Interlaced when HD-DVD could not output progressive?

7 - Our lab did a great job on the encode. Are you saying they did not? Are you also saying that most nobody but Microsoft can make VC-1 Encodes that look good?

8 - Your VC-1 CODEC is good but it is not King. We will be using AVC on all future releases and I will be putting test encodes on the disc to show why.

9 - I have already stated our next project will be shot using the Red 1 Camera at 4K and we will also feature some 8K source content with 192/24 audio. Nature's Journey was not intended to be our best effort...just our best effort to date. Being in the camp of "Not Good Enough" guys...we want to better ourselves with each release...which is why we will use AVC on our next title...

10 - You comments remind me of the movie "Thank you for Smoking." The PR Spin Master in that film states that he does not need people to believe him...he just has to get people to NOT believe the other guy.

11 - There is nothing in your quotes referencing me that is correct or factual. This is all Misinformation. The post is misleading people....again.

12 - I generally disagree with you on many levels....but do not disagree with you regarding your comments on Power Supplies, Digital Amplifiers, and Equipment Design.

Rich’s title is shot on interlace camera even though all of us are experiencing these images on progressive displays. Surely he knows this. Yet, I am sure the interlace camera was easier to come by and was smaller and easier to carry than high-end progressive one. So “good enough” practice was put in use because well, his producer had to live in the real world when it comes to

Samsung announced today its high definition combo player (HD DVD/Blu-ray) model BD-UP5000, (first reviewed by HD Guru™) will ship by this December. A number of websites have been inaccurately reporting the player has been withdrawn from release.

Below is a copy of Samsung’s press release regarding its combo BD-UP5000 and the (Blu-ray only) BD-2400.

Since the announcement of the BD-P1400, BD-P2400 and BD-UP5000, Samsung assessed its product lineup and after discussions with our channel partners, decided to focus on the BD-P1400 and the BD-UP5000 to make its next-generation offerings more efficient. As a result, the BD-P2400 was removed from the 2007 Holiday Line-up.

Status of BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player:

  • The Duo HD Player will ship from Samsung factories at the end of October and will be available to consumers at retail by mid to late December

  • The Duo HD Player will be BD Profile 1.1 Ready – this means it will include the necessary hardware to play BD Profile 1.1 discs

  • A firmware update will be available at the end of January 2008 to allow playback of BD Profile 1.1 discs***

  • *** Profile 1.1 discs are currently not available and compatibility must be fully tested before we can assure complete compliance to BD Profile 1.1 requirements.

Coupled with the T3 release from Warner using duplicate video tracks, one with burned in PIP commentary for IME instead of BD 1.1, this would indicate 1.1 not happening by October 31st.

This is where my frustration with BD and the BDA is justified. With the money and power at their disposal, things like 1.1 should not be a problem at all. Maybe they are spending too much of their budget on marketing and PR telling us that BD has already won the war and is the better product.

Remember, the 10/31 deadline was ....

All players after that date must be 1.1 capable. I don't think they ever clearly stated that they had to support it out of the box with proper firmware.

plus, with no 1.1 titles to test, how can they make the 10/31 deadline?

So in theory after Oct 31st a vendor can release a player that contains the hardware for 1.1 support but in fact never ever enable it, or choose to enable it if and when they like? There's no deadline for players actually supporting 1.1? That's even more stupid to be honest.

So what are you saying pplchamp, the BDA can't test 1.1 players until the studios release 1.1 titles? How do the studios test 1.1 titles with no players?

Do you not think BDA engineers have a bunch of test 1.1 discs already, and are authoring more now to test the technology?

I'm saying, I don't know. Apparently, this player will have 1.1 hardware, it will be out after the deadline, but noit have firmware til '08.

I'm as confused as everyone. The other odd thing is that they said they need to test 1.1, that's why no 1.1 until '08. Again, that makes little sense too.

I will try to clear up the Profile 1.1 concerns I have read on this page.

Profile 1.1 is for players.  This does not apply to movie titles, since Profile 1.1 is a hardware requirement.  Movie studio can decide to put 2 video streams on titles whenever they choose.  We all know Warner like to let HD DVD keep that advantage as long as possible.  New Line Cinema and Fox have both announced PiP titles for November and December.

Therefore, 10/31 is the date for any NEW BD player MODELS to be, at least, Profile 1.1 compliant (which means the players will have to ABILITY to decode two video streams at once).  The feature may remain locked until movie titles with PiP are released or even later.  These things do not go against what was previously announced concerning Profile 1.1 and 2.0.

No one in authority has ever said that movies will start having PiP after Oct. 31.  To believe differently would be a consumer error.

Of course, these players are already completed, but not yet in the marketplace.  Therefore, they can be tested without the players being available to the public.  The Samsung dual format player, due this 4th quarter, will be Profile 1.1 compliant.

The BDA MUST make sure QA levels are maintained across ALL manufacturers.  I'm sure the last thing they want is to find out a manufacturer or movie studio has not followed the guidelines properly (causing that model not to work properly with PiP content).
