| Posted: | | | | Transformers HD DVD Party Goes BadlyQuote: I got my copy of Transformers HD-DVD earlier this week, and watched it. It is a great movie, definitely one of the best HD movies yet released (on any format), although the audio is a little compressed (not as much dynamic punch as I would like).
So last night (Friday), I had another party with a double feature: Transformers HD-DVD first, and then the new AC/DC live concert blu-ray.
Well guess what happened? The HD-DVD player informed me after playing the dreamworks logo screen, that there was a disc error. And then the player was dead. With several party guests hurling insults at me, I tried just about everything I could think of. My Toshiba HD-DVD is a dog! Takes forever to turn off, and then on again. We cleaned the HD-DVD, rolled back the latest firmware update, etc, etc. Cold reboot. Nothing worked, it was the same error message. So then we noticed that the damn disc was doing a "network update" on startup. So next thing we disconnected the ethernet cable, and then... voila! it worked! So something in the net update between tuesday and friday broke it! When I googled this, I noticed other people are reporting the same issues.
Personally, this annoys the poop out of me. I could not give a damn about network interaction, I just want to watch the damn movie. And then to think that we have a compressed sound track, so that the Paramount can give me a buggy online interactivity option that I don't give a flying fox about..... well, that just plain sucks. You don't see these HD DVD stories in the news. They, generally, get covered up somehow, so I will make it known that HD DVD players have a lot of issues. The funny thing is that the extra web functionality killed the movie (the most important part). Knocked Up Problem With 360 Add-OnAnother Knocked Up ExampleAnother Transformers ExampleHD-A30 ProblemTransformers Disc Playback IssueHD-XA2 ProblemHD-A2 ProblemAll these problems are RECENT issues that you probably haven't read about in news reports. Any little thing goes wrong that is a simple fix for the manufacturers (just download the update from the site) on the Blu-ray side, it's on a bunch of websites listed as "Blu-ray woes continue" or something. These HD DVD issues don't get that treatment (and there are a LOT of them). Why is that? I mean these problems shouldn't be happening because it's all from 1 manufacturer. They don't have to work with a bunch of other companies and still keep trade secrets...secret. Therefore, what's the problem? Oh well... | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles |

Gee, you mean the general HiDef news doesn't cherry-pick through every internet forum to find whiners and trolls? Too bad, we could really use more of these excellent first-hand accounts! |

| Posted: | | | | If I didn't know any better, I would swear that Toshiba and Microsoft must have traumatized A_S in some way during his early childhood. Perhaps they ran over his dog, or maybe they laid off his father, forcing him to push A_S sister's into a life of prostitution. Or perhaps he lived downstream from their manufacturing plants and the toxic waste run-off caused his parents to lose their farm, or maybe they just bullied him in the playground and stole his lunch money. Whatever it is he is seriously on a vendetta to exact his revenge upon these two consumer electronic villains who cause him such disdain!!! | | | My Collection!!! | | | Last edited: by Calidain |

"My friend just called me and he said that his new BDP-S300 is not playing Pirates that it needs a firmware upgrade. I'm trying to help him find it and I'm not having any luck.
If it does need one could someone point me to it? Is it like HD-DVD where you have to have a CD-RW to update it?"
"thanks. so the terrible performance with pirates is normal for the time being?"
"Everybody seems to be having long load times with the two Pirates movies (with the s300). The load time is apparently about 3-4 times longer than any other disc. It's because of the advanced BD-Java the disc uses."
Startling...Whoda thunk BD players would have such problems? I mean, they have like 400 trillion companies working together. Someone should have been smart enough to figure it out. |

"Has anyone noticed a problem with the BDP-S1 freezing after you use the skip chapter button? I updated the firmware to 2.5, but still have the problem. It doesn't have a problem with standard DVD's just the blu ray movie I bought. Gone in 60 Seconds. It has also lost sound a couple of times after skipping chapters. The only way I could get the sound back was by powering it off and back on. I don't have another BD to try yet, and am afraid to spend more money. I might just take this back and get an upconvert DVD player." |

| Posted: | | | | And then there's this poor guy...
"Around April I bought an HD DVD add-on for my Xbox 360 and have since collected over 45 (and counting) HD DVD titles locally - but mostly imported from overseas (I live in Australia).
I have been very impressed with my HD DVD player... but when Sony finally released the BDP-S300 here last week, I decided to take the plunge.
I also bought the Spider-man Trilogy and some other Blu-ray discs with it, which I have been trying out tonight.
This brief review is probably not totally fair, considering my HD DVD player has a tri-core processor behind it, but...
The Blu-ray player is so slow, it is ridiculous. I power on the player, it takes 45sec to warm up and open the drive. Insert the disc, another 45sec where the TV is blank and the display on the player says "LOADING". Another 45sec where a progress bar (that simply fills up over and over again - never shows the real progress). And for some discs... Yet another 45sec of loading (for example - on Spider-man, a picture of a spider fills up - on Pirates, a key spins around continuously).
When I put a disc in my HD DVD add-on, I wait 30 seconds... and I'm in and watching the movie.
Another disappointing thing I found with the Blu-ray player is that on many discs, the experience is very inconsistent. On the Spider-man 3 disc, I went in to a gallery. I pressed play and the gallery started. It then took me a couple of minutes to the get the player to pause so I could get back to the menu (the controls seemed to be frozen). But instead of (logically) being able to press the "Menu" button on the remote, I had to press the "Green" button on the remote to get back to the main menu. Any other button produced "Operation prohibited on this disc".
I have found my collection of HD DVD discs (which I have a lot more of) to be more consistent from one to the next than my small collection of Blu-ray discs.
On the positive sides, the video and audio is comparable to my HD DVD discs, the player is a lot quieter than my Xbox 360 (but I guess a stand alone Toshiba player would be too) and the unit itself looks very slick.
Does anyone have slow loading issues with this player as well? What about with the PS3?" |

| Posted: | | | | I had my first BD problem tonight while watching Edward Scissorhands (aside from the Pirates framing issue, which is not really a problem unless you look for it). Apart from the video not being up to the best hidef standards (Universal, Warner and Paramount all seem to do better with their catalog titles), the audio was out of sync during the whole movie. Very annoying. Maybe I need a firmware update. Too bad then that Samsung seems to have forgotten about the BD-P1200, even the 1000 gets more updates... | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | From HighDef digest:
Paramount says first-week sales numbers for its HD DVD release of 'Transformers' top those of any other high-def disc released on either next gen format to date. According to a just-issued press release from Paramount, the HD DVD edition of 'Transformers' sold over 100,000 units in its first day of release, and went on to sell an additional 90,000 units over next six days, making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format, as well as the best selling HD DVD ever. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |

Startling...Whoda thunk BD players would have such problems? I mean, they have like 400 trillion companies working together. Someone should have been smart enough to figure it out. And, like I said, you see these firmware update fixes in the news. You DON'T see the HD DVD ISSUES in articles across the news. Why is that? I asked this before, but no one here seems to have an answer. WHY? Plus, the HD DVD players take even LONGER to start-up than a Blu-ray (unless you put a Samsung BD-P1000 against a 2nd gen HD DVD player). I had to mention that because some people can't do a fair comparison. | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles |

| Posted: | | | | You can find cowpie on every farm, that was the purpose of my posts there bud. Maybe the reason you don't see it everywhere is that the HD format is centralized and different manufacturers don't have to individually release. That's been one of the biggest thorns in BD side. There is a lack of continuity so when something goes wrong eberyone has to ask who and how they are affected. It makes for bigger news because there are more players (companies) involved in the fix. When FF ROSS was released I'm sure every player manufacturer rushed to check compatibility. You don't have the same kind of a problem with HD because of the infrastructure of the technology. It IS compatible. Of course there will be glitches along the way and most people SHOULD recognize that. Neither format is perfect. Besides, it's more fun to poke fun at Blu-ray |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Battling Butler: Quote: umm, so absolutely no problems with any Bl-ray players then ............ right I name 7 seperate RECENT problems with HD DVD players. The others name between 3 to 5 seperate problems for standalone Blu-ray players over the ENTIRE year. That's a HUGE difference...isn't it? The list I provided extends across the add-ons, the standalone players, and the discs (ALL recent). How many issues are there with PS3 Blu-ray players over it's entire lifecycle so far besides not doing 720p? How many issues with Blu-ray standalone players are there that wasn't corrected in a firmware release within a few days (and that from MANY different manufacturers...not just one)? I just want you guys/gals to be fair about this WHOLE thing. You know the HD DVD player and disc problems are being covered up while Blu-ray issues (some are just neutral studio's decisions) are pushed into the light. Why lie and say Blu-ray has more problems than HD DVD? I just ask for people to be fair about this. Why is that too much to ask for? | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles |

Since HD DVD only has 1 manufacturer with products out, there should be no real issues. That's not the case at all. Toshiba is having more issues than ALL the Blu-ray manufacturers put together. That's a huge problem for HD DVD. There should not be this many issues coming from 1 manufacturer. That should have made it news worthy every time, but that's not the case...is it? | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles |
