I know this part.  I just find it odd that movies he directed are not going to be released on HD while, at least, one film he produced will be.  In fact, it will be released on the 16th.  I would have thought he had more control over movies he produced.

It could be that there are other "producers" involved. Remember, he did not direct the Back to the Future movies, I believe he was a "producer".

I will usually post when there are deceptive overtones in people's posts or if people are just misinformed.

For instance, you have a deceptive overtone of HD DVD is making some grand comeback.  If people don't look at what was released at that time, they might would agree with you.  But, you know I do my research, so I know what causes certain things to happen.

That week for HD DVD releases looked like the following:

    * Evening  (Universal)
    * Freedom: 2 (Bandai Visual)
    * The Getaway (1994) (Universal)
    * Gods and Generals (Warner)
    * Gothika (Warner)
    * Knocked Up (Universal)      (Day & Date Release)
    * Next (Paramount)              (Day & Date Release)
    * Patch Adams (Universal)
    * The Wild Bunch (Warner)
    * Wyatt Earp (Warner)

That week for Blu-ray releases looked liked the following:

    * Black Book  (Sony)
    * Gods and Generals (Warner)
    * Gothika (Warner)
    * Memoirs of a Geisha (Sony)
    * Tekkonkinkreet (Sony)
    * Underworld (Sony)
    * The Wild Bunch (Warner)
    * Wyatt Earp (Warner)

NO Day & Date releases and HD DVD STILL lost!  Day & Date releases, BY FAR, sell the most, but it didn't help HD DVD win a week!  That's really .  The week that HD DVD has a very good chance of winning is next week (Transformers) and MAYBE the week after.  Then Spiderman 3 comes out, so you know what happens after that.

Since you like Nielsen numbers, I will post Friday's results here.  How does that strike you?

HERE is of Nielsen Videoscan numbers for this year.  Enjoy.

Camp estimates 5 million computer drives will be sold through 2008

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 10/9/2007

OCT. 9 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.—HD DVD set-tops have reclaimed their dominance over Blu-ray standalone players, according to weekly NPD Group unit sales figures cited by Toshiba.

HD DVD players began outselling Blu-ray models starting in mid-September and regained a year-to-date lead of a little over 50% through the rest of the month, said Jodi Sally, Toshiba VP of marketing of digital A/V products.

Year to date, according to NPD figures she cited, HD DVD players command 53% of sales; Blu-ray players, 44%; dual format players, 3%.

She acknowledged several Blu-ray weekly victories in the run-up to home theater installer conference CEDIA, but she told attendees at Tuesday’s DVD Forum conference, that Blu-ray victory was short lived. At the time of CEDIA in early September, Sony executives said that the launch of the company’s $499 models, which marked the cheapest available BD set-tops to date, helped boost their August sales.

“When new models hit stores there will be a surge in demand. There were some weeks where we lagged,” said Sally. “But overall HD DVD continues to dominate.”

Toshiba began launching its series of third generation HD DVD players in September. Its new entry-level model, the $299 HD-A3 is beginning to hit shelves in October.

Sally also talked up HD DVD strength within PC drives. Toshiba estimates that 5 million HD DVD drives for desktops and notebooks will be sold during fiscal 2008. She believes that should make the format competitive with the Playstation 3, which was nearing 2 million units sold in the U.S. through the summer. HD DVD laptops are closing in on a relatively attractive $1,000 price point, likely fueling the retail movement.

Toshiba believes more people are buying PC HD DVD drives with the pure intention to watch high-def movies than people who are buying the PS3. Sources have estimated that just 20% of PS3 owners have played movies on the machine.

Redmond (WA) – Microsoft today announced that it will be forming with Toshiba the Advanced Interactivity Consortium (AIC), intended to become an “open forum” that aims to accelerate the adoption of “advanced interactivity and interoperability” across HD DVD products.

Microsoft is slowly but surely moving from a role of being an active supporter of the HD DVD format into a new role of becoming one of the driving forces behind the adoption of the format. Having finalized HDi, the firm’s implementation of HD DVD's interactive layer, Microsoft is now pairing up with the main promoter of HD DVD, Toshiba, to help to highlight existing and upcoming interactivity features of the format.

In Microsoft’s words, the AIC is aimed “at the promotion of superior interactivity for a wide range of next-generation consumer devices, digital content and distribution scenarios.” The organization’s mission is to “maximize consumer satisfaction worldwide” by enhancing interactivity and interoperability features within the HD DVD industry. New features are planned to be made available also to other platforms, including digital downloads to DVD players, PCs, TVs, cell phones, portable media players and game consoles.

Microsoft said that the AIC will also include Hollywood studios such as DreamWorks Animation SKG, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros.

In an unrelated announcement, MPEG LA today said that a group of 16 HD DVD patent holders today met in an effort to work toward a joint HD DVD license. Instead of having to negotiate separate licenses, the group wants to create a general license that will be providing “fair, reasonable, non-discriminatory access to essential patents.” The initial group consists of LG Electronics, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Samsung, Sanyo, Sonic Solutions, TDK, Thomson, Toshiba, JVC and Warner Bros.

"300" Sold 250,000 Units on Blu-ray So Far!

Quote:
OCT. 10 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.--Supporters of the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc high-definition formats locked horns at the HDTV DisplaySearch conference here Wednesday, but all participants ultimately agreed they were heartened by the fact that consumers are adopting high-def discs, even slowly.

“The chances are pretty slim” that high-def won’t succeed, said Don Eklund, executive VP of advanced technologies for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “There are obstacles in getting consumers to appreciate it, but it’s inevitable it will roll. Satellite and cable do a good job of indoctrinating people to high-def and by extension high-def packaged media.”

Currently, high-def stand-alone players comprise a 5% unit share within the total DVD player market, according to DisplaySearch. Although that is small, that share has significantly improved in recent weeks. Between April 2006 and August 2007, next-gen set-tops totaled just 1.3% of the overall DVD player market.

By year end, there should be about 1 million Blu-ray and HD DVD set-top units sold, the research concern predicts.

On a revenue basis, next-gen players carved out a 27% share of the overall market during the month of August. That marks a rise from next-gen’s 11% share between April 2006 and August 2007.

Software is in a similar boat, selling a relatively small amount within the greater home entertainment landscape, with $150 million in cumulative Blu-ray and HD DVD revenue to date. Unit sales are at 4.5 million at this point.

Research comes from a combination of findings from sister companies DisplaySearch and NPD Group.

“Without a format war, adoption might be higher,” said Ross Young, founder and president of DisplaySearch. “But [high-def] is coming.”

Russ Crupnick, VP and senior industry analyst for NPD, said just 11% of people surveyed by NPD said they planned to purchase a next-gen set-top in the next six months.

Also, PlayStation 3’s dominance within the high-def player field has not yet translated to strong viewing of compatible Blu-ray titles. Less than half of PS3 users are watching Blu-ray films.

Plus, standard-definition upconverting DVD players, still attractively pried below high-def players, are growing faster in overall DVD market share than next-gen players. Upconverting players command 27% of the market on a unit basis, dwarfing high-def’s 5% share.

But Crupnick believes that once people try high-def packaged media playback they will become cheerleaders for the new formats.

“How do we go from confusion to forecasts that say that in a few years half the market will be high-def?” he asked. “It’s the experiences of people with next-gen. About 90% [of those recently polled] said they were extremely satisfied with their next-gen player purchase. You don’t usually see those kinds of numbers.”

High-def hardware owners said that every two of three packaged media purchases were next-gen, according to NPD research.

Despite proof of some progress, studio executives remain concerned over the format war stifling sales. According NPD polling, 54% of people said they didn’t want to go high-def because of the format war.

In the name of eventually ending it, Blu-ray and HD DVD executives tried to convince conference-goers of the superiority of their respective camps.

HD DVD participants were quick to needle the Blu-ray folks over PS3 gamers’ measured use of the system’s Blu-ray player. They also claimed victories in software, as the only Web-enabled titles released to date are on HD DVD. Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Evan Almighty, which was released on Tuesday, is the first home entertainment title to extensively offer e-commerce.

Striking back, Blu-ray supporters insisted that consumers adopt high-def because of great content resolution, not bonus features. Regardless of gamers’ film activities, Blu-ray titles are out-selling HD DVD titles by a two-to-one ratio.

Warner Home Video’s 300 HD DVD title, one of the first releases to offer Web-based interactivity, sold half as many copies as the 300 Blu-ray version, which lacked those advanced features. Also, Warner VP of high-def marketing Dan Silverburg primarily credits PS3 users for what the studio believes is an impressive quarter of a million units sold of 300 on Blu-ray.

“For people who buy HDTVs, the intent is not to interact with it—it’s so they can have high-definition viewing,” said Andy Parsons, senior VP at Pioneer Electronics and chair of the Blu-ray Disc Assn.’s U.S. Promotion Committee. “Interactivity is nice, but it’s not causing people to say I won’t watch the movie [if it’s absent].”

However, HD DVD’s interactivity best mirrors the lifestyle of today’s growing YouTube, MySpace and Facebook fan base, countered Alan Bell, executive VP and chief technology officer at Paramount Pictures.

“Each of the formats creates great picture and sound, but we need something more to sell next-generation,” he said. “For younger folks, their choice of entertainment is to interact with others. Also, [Web interactivity] is an exciting transition between playing DVD and five to 10 years from now when things are digital.”

PS3 is expected to soon offer a firmware upgrade to boost its Blu-ray interactivity functionality, noted Sony’s Eklund.

If "300" has sold 250,000 so far (and going); Spiderman 3, Pirates 3, Harry Potter 5, and Die Hard 4 should do VERY well this quarter on Blu-ray.

But the real gems are still left... Why did Disney NOT release The Jungle Book on Blu-ray... I think that is absolutly the dumbest move Disney, and therefore the BDA, made this year.

Only Disney knows why they didn't release Jungle Book on Blu-ray.  I don't think Disney would release their top gem (if it could be called their top gem...it's not a favorite of mine for sure) with only 2 million BD players out there.  We should accept that like we accept Star Wars won't be on Blu-ray for awhile.

These studios have plans in place and they are not going to depart from that much.  There could be a budget that Disney has set aside for  "X" amount of Blu-ray titles and that's it.  Remember, only a few of these title HD titles pay for themselves or make a profit.  Blu-ray exclusive studios have a business model built around Blu-ray media.  There is no hit of evidence that anyone is paying for them to release BD titles.  That will also decide what does and doesn't get released at what time.  Sales have to be at a particular level for certain titles to be released.

IMO, sales for Jungle Book would be no where near the sales of a day & date release (according to past trends).  I'm sure they are very aware of this.  It's probably just not worth it for them to release that title at this time.  There are already over 120 BD titles announced for the 4th quarter anyway.  A good business move is usually not the "dumbest move".
