Report: Samsung Cancels BDP-2400 Blu-ray Player, Delays BD-UP5000 Dual-Format Player
Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 07:55 AM
Although they were among the most eagerly anticipated of the season, it seems two of Samsung's previously-announced next-gen players will not hit store shelves later this month as originally planned.
WesleyTech.com first broke the news late Friday that Samsung had cancelled its higher-end BDP-2400 Blu-ray Player. Later, it was revealed that the manufactuer would also delay the launch of its dual-format HD DVD/Blu-ray player, the BD-UP5000.
Both players had originally been expected to hit store shelves before November 1st. As announced by Samsung back in July, the BDP-2400 was set to be a slightly higher-end cousin to the just-released BDP-1400, including all of the later player's features, plus Samsung's proprietary de-interlacing technology.
The dual format BD-UP5000 player is now expected to hit store shelves sometime in December. As we've previously reported, Samsung will be the second manufacturer to market an dual player capable of playing HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, following the introduction of LG's BH100 in January of this year.
LG plans to release its own new dual-format player (the BH200) later this month.
There's no official word yet from Samsung (nor any explanation for the apparent change in plans), but retailers are corroborating WesleyTech's report. |

New 'Shrek' Specs Promise Several HD DVD Firsts
Fri Sep 28, 2007 at 10:00 AM ET
Final specs are in for the highly-anticipated HD DVD debut of 'Shrek the Third,' including word of a first-ever branching PIP commentary and the most comprehensive web-enabled content yet.
Although DreamWorks Animation already announced most of the specs for the 'Shrek the Third' HD DVD earlier this month, now they've issued an even more comprehensive rundown of the disc's contents.
Expanding upon the picture-in-picture video commentary feature found on other HD DVDs, the "Animator's Reel" will not only present an entire alternate version of the film in storyboard form, but it will further utilize the format's HDi technology to offer a "contextual seamless branch" to lost scenes and other content.
'Shrek the Third' is also set to push the boundaries in terms of what's been offered as web-enabled content on previous HD DVD releases. DreamWorks says a number of additional exclusive features will be made available for download the day the disc hits stores, including a full-length subtitle trivia track, a movie guide with files on characters and talent in the film, plus an interactive coloring book feature that allows you to digitally paint your favorite scenes.
As previously announced, the disc will also provide users the ability to customize their own menus based on famous 'Shrek' characters. Once customized, the user's menu will become the default menu for the disc, even after it has been ejected from the player.
Additional features identical to the standard DVD edition of the film are set to include audio commentary, multiple making-of featurettes, deleted scenes sand more.
DreamWorks has set a $39.98 MSRP for the HD DVD. |

| Posted: | | | | Panasonic: Blu-ray will win by New Year's DayExec predicts PS3's hi-def format will defeat Microsoft-backed HD DVD in next-gen disc format war.By Michael Kanellos, News.com CHIBA, Japan--The decisive battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD is at hand, says a prominent Panasonic exec. Blu-ray manufacturers are going to start cutting prices and go out on a promotional binge this holiday season, Matsushita Electric Industrial's Kazuhiro Tsuga said during a briefing with reporters at Ceatec, a large tech trade show that started here Tuesday. At Matsushita, which is best known for its Panasonic brand name, Tsuga is an executive officer who oversees networking efforts, some home electronics technologies and overseas labs, and other areas. By the end of the Christmas season or the end of the first quarter, the writing will be on the wall. The format war in earnest may last only another year, he predicted. "The BD (Blu-ray disc) companies will try to do our best to promote Blu-ray," he said. "The studios want us to put money in to promote it." He added: "By the end of the year, you will see good products with very good promotion." The Blu-ray coalition is also working on ways to cut the price of slim Blu-ray drives and recorders to allow the technology to infiltrate notebooks and PCs. And wouldn't you know it--Matsushita has new Blu-ray players on the way. The three models will handle 18 hours of full-HD programs on a dual-layer disc and will go on sale November 1 in Japan, according to Reuters. Tsuga's no fan of combo players that conjoin Blu-ray and HD DVD features. Last year, he called the idea "stupid, stupid." He pretty much repeated the comment this year and said that Matsushita still has no plans for such a device. He downplayed Paramount Pictures' commitment to release movies on HD DVD exclusively, saying it only lasts for 18 months, and argues that studios are going with HD DVD "because big money came" to them. | Posted: | | | | According to my order with Amazon.com, HD-DVD hardware is outselling BD players by 100% and software is at a HD advantage of 3-0...This is scientific proof people. I did the experiment myself and can vouch for the validity of my claims. |

| Posted: | | | | Hitachi Develops 100GB Blu-ray Disc It's not ready for primetime quite yet, but Hitachi says it has developed a Blu-ray disc with twice the storage capacity of a BD-50 disc.
Although other companies (including TDK and Panasonic) have developed similar prototypes, each have required a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc.
By contrast, Hitachi's new four layer disc is believed to require only a firmware update to be compatible with existing drives.
According to a report from PC Pro, the manufacturer is working to stabilize signal quality before considering a commercial roll-out for the new discs.
Like the 51 GB HD DVD disc currently in development by Toshiba, it's expected that if Hitachi's 100 GB Blu-ray discs do hit the market, it will be for data storage use to begin with (and not movies).
PC Pro reports that Hitachi is also developing an eight layer disc that would hold 200GB of data.

Sony to Unleash 'Godzilla' on Blu-ray in 2008 In a very early announcement, Sony has confirmed that the 1998 incarnation of 'Godzilla' will stomp his way to Blu-ray this coming March in a special "Monster Edition" boasting brand-new bonus features.
Hatched from the minds of 'Independence Day' creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, 'Godzilla' was not the instant blockbuster that many predicted, but it do go on to gross over $300 million worldwide and has enjoyed a healthy afterlife on DVD (largely due to its demo-ready scenes of Godzilla laying waste to New York City).
Now, Sony is preparing to drop a new "Monster Edition" DVD re-issue for March 28, which the studio has confirmed will be released on Blu-ray day-and-date.
Sporting remastered picture and sound, tech specs for the Blu-ray include 1080p video (codec TBA) and uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround audio.
Extras planned for both the Blu-ray and DVD versions will be the "Behind the Scenes of Godzilla with Charles Caiman" featurette, an "All Time Best Of Godzilla Fight Scenes" montage, a "Heroes" music video by The Wallflowers, and more to be announced in the coming months.
Sony has not yet announced an MSRP for 'Godzilla,' but we'll keep you posted.
