| Posted: | | | | UPDATED! a few equipment changes since I last posted TV: Toshiba 32HL57 (almost two years old already, but still shiny) Blu-Ray/HD-DVD LG BH200 (I love this thing, the only thing it won't do is decode DTS-HD Master to multi-channel PCM) Universal Remote Harmony 720 (I picked this up last Boxing day for 50% off. It has a bit of a learning curve, but once I got the kinks worked out it was amazing. I like the colour LCD and LOVE that it is rechargeable, not to mention fully customizeable. And it controls EVERYTHING in my system that can be controlled by IR ) DVD-R/VCR: Toshiba D-VR6 upconverting DVD-Recorder & VCR. (never use it anymore, but good to have some backwards compatibility.)Front Speakers: Energy C-200s (I got them on a massive sale-price at Future Shop timed perfectly to replace my old Missions one of which which just developed a blown tweeter. Shockingly massive and deep bass for bookshelf speakers, it was like adding a sub-woofer, and its Canadian! ) Centre Speaker: Energy C-C50 (I picked it up on sale with the new front speakers, nothing wrong with the old Mission other than this speaker has twin woofers and the Mission only had a single, two is better than one, right?)Surround Speakers: Mission M70 Amplifier/Receiver: Yamaha RXV-1600 (still awesome) LD Player: Sony MDP-510 (I always wanted a laserdisc player when I was younger, but could never justify the cost of the player or the discs. I finally bought this one off e-Bay a few years ago for a whopping $30 (plus $50 to ship it up from the States) ) HTPC: Acer M5100 with Athlon64 X2 6000+, with 3 GB ram, add-on LG GGC-H20L and ATI 3670 HDMI video card (I have a USB cable running into the living room connected to a infrared receiver so that I may control the computer (which is in the bedroom) with a Microsoft Media Centre Keyboard as well as the Harmony remote. I am running Vista which has its issues, but I quite like the new-improved Media Centre interface. Both Arcsoft TotalMedia and PowerDVD 9 integrate with the Media Centre for Blu-ray and HD DVD (Arcsoft only) playback, so I am covered if anything should happen to the LG.)Satellite Receiver 1: Expressvu 9200 PVR dual HDTV Tuner with additional ATSC tuner built-in (yes boys and girls I can record three HD programs simultaneously ) Satellite Receiver 2: Expressvu 6141 with a Comstar 750 GB external USB HD add-on (The external HD adds PVR capability to this HD receiver and an additional 80 Hours of HD recording time to the 25 I get with my 9200. That means I can watch the NHL playoffs in HD and still never miss my shows . It also has an ATSC tuner built-in; I wish Canada would hurry-up and go digital already, but I can pick up a few stations from across the border. So in theory, between the two receivers and using the built-in ATSC I could be recording 5 HD programs simultaneously while watching a 6th, crazy.)Mindisc Player: Sony MDS-JE440 (Dang it, I still think Mini-discs are cool....of course I never seem to use them anymore ) CD Player: Sony CDP-CE245 5-disc player (a formerly interim solution that I bought off e-bay for a ridiculous $25 CDN including shipping when my nifty 200-disc Kenwood died. I initially thought it was not remote compatible because I could not get any of the Sony remote codes to work with the Universal remote that came with my Yamaha receiver, but the Harmony had no trouble finding a code. The player works well and sounds good so I am feeling no pressure to replace it. And it was only $25.) Tape Deck Sony TC-WR570 (I have had this thing since at least 1992, dual deck auto-reverse, Dolby NR B & C, Dolby HX Pro recording, synchronized-dubbing, AMS, remote compatible...this was all so impressive back in the day. I don't use it, but I have the space and it still works so why not keep it?) XM Radio Mini-Tuner and Home-Dock kit (add-on for the Yamaha receiver, I literally only got this to receive the Met Opera Channel once it became availble to XM Canada. I am enjoying exploring all the other stations.) Internet Radio Aluratek AIRMM01F (Because I just don't have enough music options An oddly inexpensive little alarm-clock with an IR remote, built-in wi-fi and ethernet, rca out and access to 11,000 free music channels world-wide. It has a large easy-to read display and can access your media server for MP3 playback and can also connect to a time-server for perfect time, all the time. I picked one up for my Dad this past Christmas because he is always complaining about the death of shortwave. He liked it so much he bought two more (one for the bedroom, one for my sister) and I liked it enough to get one for myself.) Turntable Dual CS 410 (This is another little e-bay find; only $40 and the seller threw in free delivery because he was coming into the city anyway and didn't feel like packing it up for shipping. This is the older version of the CS 410 which now sells as the the updated Dual CS 415-2, not the crappy plastic silver-coloured one with with the built-in pre-amp they sell these days. I am very pleased with the sound and was even more pleased to discover my local HMV has brought back whole selection of new LPs. I picked up a remastered LP of Metallica's Black album and it was astonishing. I guess missed that new-vinyl sound.) Gaming System Nintendo Wii (It doesn't play Blu-ray, and it is only 480P, but darn-it-all if I still don't have fun just waving my arms around. Great for parties too!) The heart of the system is the Yamaha. Other than being a bit too-old to have built-in decoding of the newer HD audio formats., it still kicks major tail. HDMI compatible (1.1) it will accept multi-channel PCM. It also has a plethora of other connection possibilities, upconverts everything to the component and HDMI outputs (480P) (just don't try to upconvert HD component to HDMI, it looks bad ) and it also cross-converts the component, composite & s-video connectors which was great when I was still using my top-of-the-line (in 1992) Sony 27" television. It is even works as an XM satellite tuner if you buy the optional antenna (which I have since done). It also comes with a full-featured Universal-remote (now replaced). One day I would like to upgrade to something like the RXV-3900 which does everything mine does, with built-in decoding of TrueHD and HD-MA, better upconverting, built-in Internet radio and audio media server, double the HDMI connections (1.3 to boot), an optional I-Pod dock, USB, Sirius and XM HD. But I am in no rush. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |

| Posted: | | | | This was my system until a few weeks ago: Display: Westinghouse TX-47F430S. Player: Sony PlayStation 3 (60 GB) Receiver: Kenwood VR-615 Speakers: Set of RCA 2280s. (5.1) I blew out the Kenwood ones that came with my receiver watching Master and Commander with the volume too loud. I think these come from a HtiB. I did switch out the RCA sub for the original Kenwood though as it was generally better, unlike all the other speakers in the set. Now: Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR806 Speakers: JBL Studio L series. two pairs of L820s for fronts and surrounds, an LC2 center and L8400P sub.
Future plans: Replace the TV either with a projector (probably Panasonic or Epson) or a 50" LED that does 120 Hz, depending on space issues. The black levels on the current system are awful. Also, I want to add a pair of JBL L890s to be my fronts and demote the 820s currently taking that slot to rear surrounds so I'll have 7.1 sound. |
