Hi All, as you have been so supportive and I thought you may want to know the latest on my 'little epileptic episode and tumour discovery' which happened whilst I was on holiday a while ago,

I've now been for a second MRI scan, this one in the UK, and have seen the neurosurgeon about options and risks. The advice is to remove the (still believed benign) tumour now - well in about a month, this is the NHS - rather than leave and observe growth rate... it's already nearly 6cm long and about 2cm deep! There are the obvious infection risks, as with any op, and if they damage the centreline blood vessel (it's quite close but I assume they will avoid at all costs!) there's the potential of a stroke which is really scary.

Additional risks are if they don't re-seal the 'brain cover' properly they may need to go in again to fix the 'leak'. There is also a chance I'll lose some strength in my left side (likely arm/hand) for a while because of brain bruising, with a tiny chance it would be permanent (1-2% I'm told) - lucky I'm right handed (the first question the surgeon asked) and gave up trying to play the guitar a while ago!

On the upside the local neuro-unit I'm attending (The Wessex) is known to be one of the best, if not *the* best, in the country so hopefully all will go well and have none of the potential complications.

Obviously it's still a big decision but I'm probably going to go ahead, as per their advice, with the op as even if I went the observation route they'd probably find out it's growing fast enough to need the op sooner rather than later and it would just prolong my worry for 3-12 months while they worked it out.

Cheers.

Hi Voltaire,

If it's still growing, better to have the surgery sooner than later, I would think. The risks - e.g. of hitting that blood vessel - are only going to increase over time.

In any case it's a good thing you'd be treated by a renowned unit like the Wessex.

Wish you lots of strength and wisdom.

Cheers,
DJ

As one who has had a dozen neurological surgeries in my lifetime (including brain cysts) and thus far happy with the results of every one of them, I encourage you to move forward and get it done. The longer you wait the bigger of an issue it can become... if only in your own mind. But it is, of course, your choice, and you may think in a different way than I do.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
