Hey folks, I checked the forums and cant find any posts that would answer my question to this. We play alot of Playstation 2 video games, we also watch alot of movies. Were I live blu-ray seems to be dominating, (Blockbuster videos, Wal-Mart, Target). so now for Christmas I was allowed by my wife to upgrade our dvd player to a blue-ray. The problem is the sony blu-ray is $379. Our playstation is on its last leg, the PS3 that plays PS2 games is the 80GB one that is $499, I have talked her into it, but I wanted to know if having the two in one is going to be a problem in the long run. Will all the playing of video games affect the quality of my movies say after one year. Or should I stick to the sony blu-ray and a seperate ps2 game system. Any input would be apreciated. Thanks

The quality of what you see won't degrade with use, we don't deal with tape heads any longer; Blu-ray is a digital delivery system, the only thing that might degrade performance is wear on the physical equipment, which will of course happen to any optical device after enough use. Games, movies, audio, it's all just reading data from discs. In terms of technical reliability, the PS3 is a well-regarded piece of kit, and can be expected to stay that way for a good long while, but that's not to say that anything lasts forever.

It should be noted however, that if you're going to be using it for PS2 games, you might be better off getting a 60gb PS3 than an 80; the 60 has hardware support for PS2 titles, whereas the 80 (and in fact all PAL systems) only has software emulation which has resulted in many compatibility problems that the 60 did not suffer. You can check on your titles here

Call me a dummy but we are in the US, are we pal or ntsc? I honestly dont know now. As far as I can see we are only offered the 40gb or 80gb at the stores, I havent seen the 60gb, but I might be wrong.

According to Wikipedia there are four versions of the PS3.  20, 40, 60 and 80GB.  All are available as NTSC and all but the 20GB are available as PAL.

A quick search for 'ps3 80gb ntsc' on google confirms that there are 80GB PS3s available on NTSC standard.

I see maybe the 60gb is no longer avialable at stores and maybe found only through ebay or something like that. I cant find the 60gb model anywere on the sony website or even any of the local big name electronics and stores like Wal-Mart. I have only seen them on Ebay, I wonder if the 60gb are new and just coming out or they are older and the new ones are the 80gb ones?

When Sony first released the PS3 last year in the U.S. it was released in two versions: the 60GB and 20GB models (both with PS2 compatibility via hardware emulation).  The 20GB didn't last long on the market as the 60GB version outsold the 20GB version (which could probably be debated as there were a higher ration of 60GB to 20GB models available.)  Then came the 80GB version which does PS2 compatibility via software emulation.  The price of the 60GB was dropped $100 (but this was a sneaky was of clearing inventory as the 60GB was no longer going to be produced.)  The 40GB version is the latest release of the PS3, but this version offers no PS2 compatibility whatsoever (as if it would cost Sony anymore to include software emulation  .)

If you can find a 60GB version to buy then pick that one up as it will offer you the better PS2 compatibility overall since it is done in hardware.  You can always upgrade the harddrive later on with a higher capacity drive (they are easily changed out).
Gotta nip it in the bud, Andy!

Actually, the PS3 80GB does NOT COMPLETELY use software emulation.  The PROCESSOR (the Emotion Engine) is emulated, but NOT the graphics engine (the Graphics Synthesizer).  The penalty is about a 8 to 10% drop in compatibility for the 60GB version.  PS1 games are COMPLETELY software emulated.  That is why the 40GB version has FULL PS1 backwards compatibility, but NO PS2 backwards compatibility (currently).

Everything else is spot on.

More info on the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer

What about the PS3 playing backed up DVD's. With 3 kids that love grabbing and playing the dvds in their own rooms, I make copies of the originals especially the Disney ones that end up going out of production and then cost an arm and leg to buy again, so will the ps3 play these dvd-r's?

The cheapest bluray player (Sony Bdp-s300) costs 500€ here, which is $735.

That is ridiculous, here they are $379 at the local Best Buy electronics store, for that same model.

OMG, you're right! That's a very useful disctinction that makes or breaks my point and is entirely relevant to the decision-making process!

Yes, they will play as long as you don't put the wrong region coded DVDs in it.

Just so you know, I mainly did that due to Overseer's last sentence in his first paragraph.

It still makes NO difference to the decision-making process that is the topic at hand. You wanna try to dazzle people with irrelevance, keep it to the big thread.
